Ordered a Curt hitch receiver since I bought the girl used without the tow package. Received this from UPS today:

That last picture is really the only damage to the area that's visible once installed, but it's laughable anyone at the warehouse can look at that and think "yeah, that looks good to ship"

Must be that "hassle free" packaging they brag about.

Luckily it's amazon so I'll just have to slap a return label on it and wait another two days to throw it on.

In an interesting turn of events, amazon has offered a partial refund for the damage if I keep this item rather than exchange it. I assume it's because they don't want to have to pay to ship this 50 lb hunk of metal two more times.

So after an $70 refund this thing will cost me $52 all-in....I guess I'm going to figure out how to make this one work at that price haha.

So now the new question is do I spray a clearcoat over it to keep the exposed/scratched areas from rusting or slap a full coat of rustoleum or something like that on it?

They have great customer service. Call them and tell them what happened. They may offer you a killer deal to just keep it. Then you can paint it up and be on your way for much less then you paid orignally

Sometimes there's an option for "ship in amazon box" for large items which supposedly asks them to put it in box for things that might ship in the product package only (like TVs, vacuum cleaners, etc). Last time I tried they ignored it, plus they don't usually put any packing material in large boxes, so the item could slide around inside and become damaged.

Slap a coat of Rustoleum on there. Satin black. You will be amazed at how good it looks.

I got a tow hitch for my former 2000 Tacoma from Amazon and it was shipped the same way. It arrived pristine. I think it cost $123 and the list price on the Curt site was three times that ($360.)

Verify it's the correct part #. I've received beat up rotors from Amazon before that didn't even have the right number of holes for wheel studs.

Clean with soap and water
Dry
Sand it all down a little
Wipe down with wet rag
Dry
2-3 coats of rustoleum

I think Curt probably bears a lot of the blame. I'm guessing they've reduced their factory packaging to keep costs down and/or increase profit. I ordered a Curt hitch for our now departed CR-V back in 2006 from eTrailer and it came in factory engineered packaging.

Did your hitch not come with any hardware? The CR-V hitch even included the fish tool that was needed to locate the mounting bolts within some enclosed body panels.

My advice would be to lighten up on life or start researching ulcer treatments. Pleolple destroy any semblance of peace or happiness with such an approach to life. I feel sorry for amazon that they have to deal with such crap.
....AND the cost doing business keeps rising on everything everywhere because companies are busy trying to keep nit-picking malcontents happy.

I'm glad it happened considering I get an equally functional hitch at 40% the cost. It's funny because it was shipped and sold from amazon - a company that's PRIMARY FUNCTION is warehousing and shipping - and showed up poorly packaged and beat up.

Sick humor. You were railing on Amazon for what amounts to, as seen from here, frankly nothing. Again this makes the cost of doing business higher for companies and good pricier for us all. Thing of it as we are all in it together. Amazon is not out to get you. In fact I'm sure if a corporation could think then they'd wish like hell they never heard of you.
That's the way these things are shipped by most all suppliers. The cosmetic issues amount quite frankly to nothing given the intended use of the item. It would likely as bad or worse if it came from any of the Franchise big names where I'm sure you could have paid much more.

Again, you're crying foul. In what way on this good green earth were you actually harmed? A basic principal of civil law (criminal as well in the ideal) would be "no harm no foul". And civility itself it seems is lost in these shoot from the hip days days where the social fashion of blind anger has become a means of reinforcing one self worth. Does any semblancef civil value or actual moral responsibility remain among the populous.

If you are a building a show rig (?) you show have gotten it chromed. (By the way, chroming weakens steel,not a good idea).

Meanwhile if those scratches youll never notice past scratches and dings it'll receive upon actually employing it for what it was made and sold for and for what I hope you procured it for rather than thinking it's one more heavy piece off steel I can bolt on my cool-ass rig so I can look cooler, well, if thats really bumming you then I'd suggest a two dollar shake can of black enamel. You can send Amazon the bill. Or me for that matter it would be worth it to remove this grave issue from your life and steer you from the path of self-imposed malcontention to the reallity of happiness and contentment and bliss.

As a consumer, I shouldn't have to decide how important surface damage is when purchasing an item - you at least try to deliver the thing in appropriate condition.

THEY LITERALLY DIDN'T USE A $0.05 CARDBOARD BOX....especially when they charge $100 per year for amazon prime shipping.
