SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom today announced that he will aggressively move the state further away from its reliance on climate change-causing fossil fuels while retaining and creating jobs and spurring economic growth – he issued an executive order requiring sales of all new passenger vehicles to be zero-emission by 2035 and additional measures to eliminate harmful emissions from the transportation sector.

Is he being recalled?

He was mayor of San Francisco when I live the in the Bay Area several years ago...every time I saw him on TV...all that came to mind was 'used car salesman'.
 
I’m glad we managed to stop the coronavirus and the economic and human devastation it caused due to political incompetence and now we can move back to crazy fantasies like banning cars and giving everybody free money.

I think we should immediately implement a 500% gas tax that will go directly into the governor’s pocket, and continue spending tens of billions to build a train to nowhere.
 
Just remember, when this clown took office he stole every penny of the gasoline tax that was meant to be used to fix the roads.

Then he said something about California needing to go on a “road diet,” and the only construction I’m seeing lately is toll express lanes and repurposing right lanes on busy surface streets into bike lanes.

Probably the only thing keeping from California devolving into a traffic apocalypse is that more people are currently working from home, but based on traffic patterns recently, I can’t imagine that lasting any longer.
 
I find the delusion of battery/electric operated transportation as a solution incredibly alarming. My favorite is these f*cking entitled Tesla owners with vanity plates like “UGETGAS” or “FOSLFRE”. Do they have any idea the machinery necessary to harvest the components for those “Earth Saving” batteries?? Or the process needed to create those batteries? Mining is one of the worst things we do to this planet. And battery components require A LOT of mining.

Here’s an example of the Penasquito Silver Mine:
“Covering nearly 40 square miles [100 square kilometers], the operation is staggering in its scale: a sprawling open-pit complex ripped into the mountains, flanked by two waste dumps each a mile long, and a tailings dam full of toxic sludge held back by a wall that’s 7 miles around and as high as a 50-story skyscraper. This mine will produce 11,000 tons of silver in 10 years before its reserves, the biggest in the world, are gone.

To transition the global economy to renewables, we need to commission up to 130 more mines on the scale of Peñasquito. Just for silver.”

The ONLY solution to any angle of this is a different way of life, and a compromise away from certain comforts. We’re all too used to 80 miles per hour and Air Conditioning in every box we place ourselves (home/transport/work/stores). Moving one way doesn’t negate the affects of the second choice. Kicking the can down the road will never work long term.

This troubles me greatly, because while electric car proponents seem to be extremely confident that we will run out of fossil fuels in the near future and if we don’t stop using fossil fuels we will do irreparable damage to the environment, they seem oddly quiet about the resources necessary to convert every single car currently on the road to electric and seem to wave off any concerns for insufficient precious metals, damaging mining policy, and honestly insufficient mining capacity with a hand wave that by the time the government puts a gun to all of our heads and mandates electric cars batteries will have magically progressed to the point where they are no longer toxic and we don’t destroy the environment to mine their components.

Furthermore, in states like California where the electric grid is already strained when it is hot and we are told to sit in the darkness, not run our appliances, or charge our electric cars, there has been no proposal as to how we are going to tweak the electric grid to suddenly support electric car charging while going green and decreasing our reliance on fossil fuels.

I’m hearing a lot that maybe if we just let benevolent government enact central planning, we will all be living in high-rise towers with government marketplaces and stores within walking distance, and those fortunate enough to have electric cars won’t have to drive them very far anyway because government travel permits will be impossible to get… Or something.

What sucks is that most people mean well, or have good intentions... however the road to hell is paved with good intentions. And I would argue most Californians would love to help. Just not enough to give up air conditioning and being able to travel large distances very shortly, very freely, I.E. non adaptive and lazy.

Again it goes back to a lifestyle issue in my opinion.

Unrelated to your post specifically, I had another theory about a piece of global warming we don’t address (aside from fossil fuel, rain forest desertification, large scale strip mining, industrial mono-cropping/top soil destruction, super highway paving) and what I’m referring to is my twice mentioned air conditioning complaint. One of the laws of thermodynamics is that heat or energy is only transferred, not destroyed. Air conditioning/refrigeration is based on the principle of removal of heat... and that heat has to go somewhere. Sure, maybe a car is only a drop in the bucket. But when you add up all the giant server rooms for Google and amazon, and ALL the cars/trucks, and all the homes, and all the office buildings and indoor sports arenas that utilize the principle of removing heat from one area and displacing it “outdoors” that HAS to have some impact of warming the surrounding areas. It doesn’t just go away. Much like throwing stuff in the garbage can. It goes somewhere and had some impact.

Or is tat funded by selling out our country?

Do they really think their grandchildren will be immune to what they are causing?

Lots of nasty chemicals and extraction technologies are involved in everything we use. Nothing is clean. Extracting and refining oil, gasoline, synthetic lube, mining for metal, plastics that don’t get recycled but dumped into the ocean, crop fertilizers, the stuff that makes up the portable computer or phone you’re reading this on. People buying new electronic toys and motor vehicles every couple of years. Too many people consuming too much stuff.
 
Maybe y’all should read that linked article and try to understand it. This is primarily an air quality issue. The air in the LA basin and Central Valley is still in bad shape and less ICE cars would have a positive effect relatively quickly. Then there’s a job creation and pro auto consumer effect to this, with more and cheaper EVs available to more people. The save-the-planet idea is a long term, remotely possible side effect.
California makes laws and regulations for the benefit of its own citizens. Freedom. States rights, etc. CA had to fight for its own clean air laws. You don’t like clean air in your state?
There’s another benefit, if CA uses less oil there will be more left for the rest of the US. :car:
