GPS (in-dash) & Satellite Radio

Hello all-

I'm getting back from Iraq and will get my truck back in a few days. It's a reunion I've been looking forward to haha

Anyway, since I saved some $$$, I'm going to buy a few toys for my truck - starting with an in-dash GPS w/satellite radio.

Anyone installed on in a 3rd Gen T4R? I'm looking at the Kenwood DNX7100 - I saw some guys put it in new T4Rs, but what about older models?

Anyone have any other GPS models they recommend? For me, I just want the in-dash kind with satellite radio.

Good question, and thank you for your service.

I can't be much help, but I'm planning on doing the same thing as soon as I save up the $$. I'm going with the Pioneer AVIC-Z2, as it seems to have more features than any of the others I've seen and looks awesome. You can get a new one for around $1200 on eBay.
 
Just incase, if you choose motorised screen type you need to be careful.
Installing motorized monitor ordinary to 3rd gen, monitor hits to A/C panel and hard to see.

Well.. This might not what you asking for but just small tip:)
 
I have a single din Pioneer Avic-N2 which is a motorized unit. It does not hit the AC panal, although it covers the AC panel. I have mine tilted back to where it hits right below the clock so it feels solid when I touch it.

Like Joey Link is looking at, I would look to Pioneer's. Either the Z2 or the N4 depending on whether you want the single or double din look. The preout voltage is pretty weak if you have or are looking to add amps. Other than that I love mine and my buddy who has the Z2 loves his.

Sorry to keep bugging you. I am going to be going to Japan this year for the first time. I will probably be around Hokaido. Is there any junk yards with Hilux. In addition is there any law agianst me getting things from there and shipping them home?

As for GPS, I think i might get a double din that fits in the dash. I think they look much cleaner and you don't have to worry about the climate controls being blocked. In addition I hate they way the flip screens look when the screen is retracted./ They never look right.

In addition, I think they may be more durable over time from bump and vibrations.

Well, I live in west area in JPN so I'm not sure where you find junk yard in Hokkaido. What exactly your looking for?
Shipping out to US is legal.

Only reason I chose Flip monitor type was 3rd gen's DIN is too low to see monitors. so I wanted to make monitor as high as possible.
but I did not want cover AC ducts. and NO WAY to put on dash.
I thought same thing flip type may be easier to break but it seems fine. BUT if I choose it again, I choose 2DIN type.. :D

I'm not sure that JPN ver had GPS field monitor.
All I remember is there was option comes with SET of field monitor and sunroof for $900 lol.
but On first pic, Japanese letter's shown so it maybe exists in JPN...?

It seems good option but I finally took ugly green stock digital clock away and matched all white lighting stuff (SPD meter, Navi, Clock and AC panel)
so I don't wanna put green items back to my Runner;):

Yeah, the GPS Field Monitor is definitely a JPN option. I had a friend that lived in London who bought one of these GPS Field Monitors from JPN, but he was unable to make it work properly. It was not until later that he found out that these models only work in JPN. Something to do with the waypoints in JPN and how the GPS tracks them. Anotherwords, it was built to only work in JPN, no where else.

About the green color, I agree it would not look right in your 4Runner. It is a cool option though.

Replacing the clock was a great idea too. I'd like some more information on what you installed, but the web site is all in Japenese...too bad I do not know anyone who speaks Japanese, otherwise, I would probably buy one right now! You think it would work over hear in the US?

I was thinking that at least clock, calender and compass may work in USA because it's GPS stuff.
but I'm sure for location stuff are all dead.
ex) notice it's getting close to tunnel,
I have something to ask to Makers so I will ask them about it too tomorrow.

BTW, I was very impressed what you done to your runner. all mods are beautifully done! specially deadeing and rool bars!
