GPS Mounting Location

Has anyone considered, or completed, installing a portable GPS in the front "flip" portion of the center console armrest cover? I'm considering so I can flip it open to use and simply close it and leave it out of sight when not in use. Before I start cutting up the cover, I wanted to see if its been done before.

I don't recall anyone here doing it.

I was thinking of using that spot when I was looking around for locations after getting a Nuvi. Not to discourage you but I opted not to for several reasons:

It would be hard to modify and carve up.
The Nuvi has a flip up antenna that I would have to work around.
It looked like an accident prone area.
It's too close so you have to twist and to put your arm slightly back to work the unit.
You're looking more down than forward while moving which would increase the hazard of using it.

What GPS are you using? If you do go ahead make sure to take pics of the process.

Good luck.

i think that would be a pretty neat idea, but there might be a couple of problems with it. the gps kinda needs a clear shot of the sky to get a good lock on the satellites, and mounting it there wouldn't allow for that. also, like Kmvreter said, you would have to look down to see it. that would be a pain and dangerous. it'd be cool to see it done, though, so go ahead and try it and let us know how it goes! :biggrin2:

I have a TomTom One. Looking down at it in that location was also my biggest concern, and also the fact that its a little too close. (not to mention the part about cutting up the console) I now have it mounted with the suction cup on the little fold down compartment at the bottom of the center console and that is within perfect reach when your hand rests on the shifter. I'm just looking for some options to mount it and have the option of hiding it, rather than having to put in the glovebox or take with me.

I hear you about trying to make it semi-permanent.
Someone just did this in front of the shifter.
Search for custom GPS mounts. I made a mount that fits under the hazard flasher button. It's real easy to dismount and stow in the glove box. I don't want it permanent because we use it between 2 vehicles.
