GPS not updating my location

Didnt turn much up in a search... figured I would post in case its Solar Flares or AWS is having another outage (as skynet becomes more self aware..)

My GPS location is stuck at my house. I drive away and it does not update that I am driving away. It just stays there. Compass direction does not change, always East. GPS icon is normal on the screen. It is not greyed out and it does not have a red line through it.
I also tried to do the tire calibration but have not seen anything change.

I disconnected the battery for an hour and then reconnected it, no change.

Two days later, (I drive every day) it starts to track my motion again... woo hoo. In watching it, it seemed to update my location very slowly with semi large jumps. Seemed odd. Like a slow sample rate.

And 2 days of working and now its stuck again. In the driveway of my house.

Not sure if any of yiu came across this or not, but I figured I would check in with the hive mind first.... then as a last resort go to the dealer.

2018, Limited, Entune. All other radio functions work.

Let me know if you have had any experience in this area.

GPS in vehicles is hit and miss. You could have a poor connection to the GPS antenna, or you are near large buildings, mountains, or something else that prevents the antenna from seeing the number of satellites it needs to figure out where it is.

My experience is that the GPS in cell phones is far superior to what is in cars, and for finding where you want to go, the cell phone apps, such as Google Maps, work so much better. Thus, I have a good cell phone mount, and use Google Maps exclusively for getting me where I want to go.

I had new tires put on a few months back. I then did the nav unit tire calibration. The following weekend I went camping up in the mountains. On our way back to civilization the GPS unit was logging our movement, but it was in the wrong direction. I rebooted it manually (hard press of the power knob), and it then worked correctly. Never an issue with the GPS before or after.

I suspect the unit starts with a measured GPS location (or last known), and then tries to use the magnetic compass and distance travelled to estimate a new location if GPS isn't available. It was strange, because it thought we were traveling along the side of the mountains where there are no roads or trails (zoom in and nada). I don't know if this was a lack of GPS, an erroneous magnetic field, or something else, but it did resolve itself.

Still frozen. Tried again today and not moving.

Guess i will go to the dealer.

I dont think its disconnected cause it will usually change the GPS icon.

Google Maps is hit-n-miss as well. In certain parts of town it stops at a pont I have passed. Does it repeatedly in this same area?

Building blocking the signal from the satellites. Happens in the mountains too, or if there are too many trees.

One reason that a cell phone based navigation works better is because the app uses the built in accelerators in addition to the satellite signal, so it can keep navigating for a short while without satellite input.

The area that the tracking falls off is void of any tall structures. No mountains/hills. Something else is going on, but thanks for your participation.

Do a factory reset on your radio and see if that helps? Maybe check for a radio update. Do you have any aftermarket accessories connected to your radio? I had my Beat-Sonic Mirroring kit connected to my radio and had an issue like yours. Ended up being the module for my mirroring kit was going out on me. I removed the kit and my radio was fine. I warrantied the kit in and everything works fine again.

GPS needs to triangulate the signal from several satellites, if you are telling me you have a clear line of sight of the heavens unobstructed by mountains, tall buildings, highway overpasses, etc. then it could be something with the unit or something wrong with your shark fin.

Also, I want to point out if you have a good satellite radio signal, it doesn’t necessarily mean you will have a good GPS signal.

I do have the anytime back up camera. I was thinking of taking that out to see if that helps. If i bring it back to the dealer for review repair it will need to come out regardless.

I have a sprint booster.

I also have an LED light bar wired up, but its on ots own circuit and not tapped into any harness.

I did not do a radio reset. But did do the battery disconnect solution.

Yes, when showing it has clean line of sight, it is showing it is getting a signal. Just not updating my location.

Try removing, cleaning, reinstalling the SD card - ? The Nav won't work without the card in place and it sounds like you've tried everything else.

(kind of the "my Nintendo circa 1988 locked up" routine)

Thanks man. I have pulled it out and replaced it. It just wont launch the map. My location is still the same.

I disconnected the sprint booster and will see if that helps.

Then up next will be pulling the anytime harness out and sending it to the dealer for review.

I will report back once i figure this out

^^This is your issue.^^

Pull it out and I bet your system starts functioning correctly.
Check the anytime backup camera harness you have for loose pins. No doubt you have a loose one on the connection for the GPS

I made my own backup camera activation circuit. After the camera is turned on then switched off, the GPS takes a second to update the location. So I am guessing your problem lies in the harness.

Oh man I totally missed that you had an anytime backup cam installed. I agree, most likely the issue lies with that.

So.. i took out the sprint booster as it is the easier thing to do. Now it is working again. Maybi i am ised to wifeys uodating frequwncy in her X5 but it seems to update my location very slowly.

I will give it a few weeks like this to see if it starts to lose my location again.

If it does, i will pull out the harness. Like others, i have it wired to a switch. At the same time, I also have the connection for being able to put in a gos address at anytime the car is moving. So those will come onto play should this happen again while the sprint booster is out.

Like my other cars... last change in is the first change reversed. The sprint booster is a few months old. The anytime reverse camera is over a year and a half old
