Just wanted to say hello to everyone and wish you all a Happy New Year.
I recently traded my GTI in on an 06 Runner SE.
After 17 years of owning VWs I must say that I wish I switched sooner.
The GTI is my LAST VW for sure I was plagued with probs from the first month of ownership.
From expensive relays and sensors crapping out and numerous electronic "gremlins" I just had enough.
Nothing but gas and oil changes on the wifey's Camry put me in a Toyota dealership and after seeing the SE 4 Runner... Well you understand what I mean...
Looking forward to reading and learning more about my new vehicle.

Hey welcome the the Toyota and 4Runner camp. You'll find many happy members here and plenty of ways to spend your money. Throw up some pics when you get a chance.
 
Welcome to the 4Runner family. I have heard a lot of horror stories about VW. I actually had a bad feeling for VW since I saw a 4 month old Beetle shooting out flames from the engine compartment on the side of the road. Make sure to post some pics of the new truck. Good luck with it and get ready to do some modding!
 
My brother is a service manager for one of the biggest VW stealers in the country, I could tell you stories!

Traded my 01 GTI for my new runner. The GTI was slowly nickel and diming me to death with electrical problems.
 
VW used to be pretty good.

I had a 1983 Rabbit that went 35k in one year with trips across several states--no issues. Traded it in for a 1984 Scirocco that went 98k in 2 years--very fast trips across blistering heat and cold. No issues. But it was getting loose and rattly after that many miles in that short a time.

I've noticed that VW and Mercedes Benz have both dropped like a rock in quality ratings in JD Powers while Toyota and Lexus take top honors again and again.

Too bad. VW had some good vehicles--their GTI defined the sport hatch back pocket rocket class in the 1980s and their Corado was a hotshot, but having reliability is much more important. VW needs to crack down on QC.

I agree. VW does not make quality vehicles anymore. 20 years ago, I would purchase a VW over a Toyota in a heartbeat. Toyota quality has done nothing but rise in the past 2 decades, but VW has done the opposite.

I have a 19 years old Golf with 216,000 miles. It just keeps going and going. I use it as a "go to work" vehicle. I hate to get rid of a reliable vehilce.
 
Well just to name a few The car was a 01 GTI GLX(VR6)
traded her in with a little over 31000 on the odometer.
4 years : (Just a taste)Clutch,Pressure plate ,Flywheel Trifecta @12000 miles
Defective was what I was told.
Battery, Alternator crapped out @ 17,500
MAF sensor went at 670 miles then again at 18,900
Gauge cluster needed to be replaced at 20,673
Oh and for Christmas this year I was told that The alternator was on the way out..So I bought another SHITE VW battery traded the beast in and here I am.
Bottom line the car didn't cost me anything for the repairs VW goodwilled everything.But I Got a little nervous about the cost of upkeep.
I negotiated the price of the runner first through the net 100 over invoice.
Then when I got to the dealer I dropped the trade bomb.
They lowballed me of course but in the end I got 11,300 for my GTI.
Retail is about 14k and according to edmunds the TMV on a trade is 9 and change.
So I was satisfied with the deal and I'm happy having some piece of mind.
As far as modding is concerned I'm pretty creative but I need some time to look at what I can do with the 4 runner because there isn't rreally much that can be done in comparison to my VW...
Time will tell I gues see you guys on the boards.....
 
Welcome to the 4Runner Family. I have been a VW owner/enthusiast for the last 26+ years. I own 4 VWs (1980 Rabbit, 1981 VW Pickup, 1985 Golf and 1987 GTI 16V) in addition to my 4Runner. For me, after 1992 VWs seemed to have had more and more issues (reliability/quality) that had me questioning a new VW purchase.

In 2004 I researched both the 4Runner and VW Touareg. One of THE deciding factors in my decision was the feedback from on-line forums like this one and the Touareg ones. When one sees an AVERAGE complaint ratio of 30 (Touareg) to 1 (4Runner) that says something. It did not hurt that a comparably equipped 4Runner cost $16K LESS than a Touareg and that the maintenance costs for a 4Runner are roughly 1/2 the cost of the same Touareg maintenance.

BTW, I think you will find that this 4Runner Forum is more friendly and mature than many of the VW Forums I visit.

FYI Koz, I could trade stories with your brother about VWs. Some of my stories might even suprise even him.
 
My wife has an '02 Golf GLS that is coming off of lease in May, and we can't wait to get rid of it! It's had a ton of problems...We're looking at getting a BMW Sport Wagon for her...

Her VW was so bad, that I'm assuming Audi's are the same way? Anyone have any experiences with either the Audi or BMW station wagons?
