grey/blue wire mod frustration

Guys, I hate to do this, but I've been melting my brain all week researching the issue. I've read all the threads I can find here and elsewhere and seen mostly happy results. The few times I run across solutions, they're not really followed up on. First, I apparently did it wrong and grounded the wire from the dash side which resulted in successful mod operation, but disabled the O/D (no dash light). OK, seen another member that wired in a switch. Dug further and realized I was supposed to ground the the wire from the harness plug side. Did that and it permanently engaged the front diff.
As of now I have the wire is severed and taped off (no grounds) so the truck is behaving normally (minus the locker not being able to engage).
So is my only option grounding the dash side of the wire, installing a switch and living with the O/D off to use the mod function? IIRC the O/D is off in 4Lo, locker engaged anyway but that kinda defeats the purpose of the mod. I'd like to be in 2Hi or 4Hi with O/D and locker if possible. WTF am I doing wrong?
Sorry to beat an old subject-
Andy

Which of the 17 4runners in your sig are we addressing?

When I ground the wrong side of the wire (harness side) it made my 4Runner think I was in 4lo which screwed my shift points and disabled OD... When I grounded the CORRECT side (plug side) the mod functioned correctly.

Edit** Good God. I just read the "Grey Wire Mod for 4Runner" thread and it's a COMPLETE mess. Jesus.

So to be clear... You'll unplug from the black box. Locate the wire to cut. The SHORT end, still connected to the plug, you'll extend and ground. The LONG end, that you cut OFF of the plug, you'll tape off, cap, etc.
