Grinding noise from front end

Hey guys. Its been a while since ive visited but a new problem has arose and thought i would ask the "pros". When driving my 98 there is a pulsating/grinding noise coming from what sounds like the drivers side front end. when inspecting, i cant seem to see anything as the immediate problem. the CV joint on the drivers side, while leaking oil/grease from the boot does not click when turning nor does it have any excessive play when rocked/shaked. the passenger side does not seem to have any problems either. i thought maybe the drive shaft from the tranny to the front end may be the cause and making it sound like it was from the front end, but i removed it today and the problem still exisits even thought that shaft is in my garage. i am thinking it may be the wheel bearing but again there is no excessive play when rocking the wheel/spindle back/forth or up/down. i have not torn down the hub completely but dont seem to have any idea where this is coming from. with the CV joint being about $100 bucks, bearings about $70-80, i just wanted to see if anyone else had this problem or any ideas...... thanx in advance

I guess there arent as many "pros" out there as i thought. Since i cant see any immediate problems with the CV joint, i will focus on the wheel bearings and let yu know what i find. I'd say thanx, but there were not any replies..........

If you have a leaking CV boot replace the half shaft that is what is making the noise.

Hmm grinding noise from drivers side front+leaking drivers side CV=cause of your problem.

While i appreciate your thoughts, i was hoping for something more than Hmm= CV joint.

As i said in my inital post, while the CV boot is leaking, it doesnt make any noise, or have any slop in it in any way. i do know what a bad CV joint is, sounds like and looks like........ a slight cut in the boot does not automatically make the joint bad. i guess i was just looking for conformation that yes, it is the bearing as i have never heard a wheel bearing do this WITHOUT showing signs of being obviously bad (ie. excessive play in the hub, etc.)

Oh well...... off to the garage.

Possible same issue.

I have been looking for some insight on possible same issue as you have. I have a 99 sr5 4x4. The front passenger side started to make a whirring/pulsing grind noise. And eventually has made it's way towards the driver side over time. I have replace the passenger side CV axle, both wheel bearings, upper an lower ball joints an both outter tie rods. After doing all that I have this reoccurring issue still causing me a headache. It has lessened in noise but it is still there.

It does not go away or get worse with turns or braking. But as you go faster an faster it slowly gets worse is the whirring an grinding noise. Obviously it should be a rotational part that is causing this. I'm wondering if it's the front diff bearings that could cause this issue and if so if there is any insight how to replace those bearings as well or of worth it.

Could be a wheel bearing. Jack it up and spin the wheel. If it sounds like grinding. Probably bad wheel bearing.

well if you want the advice of the pros go to the Toyota dealership and when you do get a reply dont have to complain about it. Just my two pennies. I know what's wrong with it but I'm not gonna help you. Seem to ungrateful tbh. :doh:

Sounds funny but I had a sound like it was right front wheel. I pulled wheel check bearing and brake shield found nothing. Spoke to my friend who is a master tech he said check the Roof rails for being loose. Sure enough it was loose tightened it up no more noise. My noise sounded kind of like a belt slip it only lasted a second or so then stopped would happen at 75 + or on very windy days at lower speeds. The sound kind of sounded like a reed vibrating. :mmph:
