Grinding Noise

So today i was on the way to my fathers office which we are renovating , so i had some paint, blinds, and other misc. stuff. Its like o 5 or so miles away. On the way there i take a shortcut through this steep sidestreet. I come up to the stop sign which is even more steeper, stop, let go of the brake to creep up, but instead of giving it a little gas i just let go of the brake and instead of creeping forward i start to go back and i hear this awful grinding noise and for some reason i couldnt push the brke pedal down any, i then put it in park, then the brake pedal was normal, and put it back into drive, it scared the $H#T outta me, my concern is did i damage any thing? (Toyta really needs to work on the hill hold thing)

That 'grinding' noise you heard was probably the ABS working with the hill hold feature. The first time I heard the ABS and traction control kick in, it worried me too. The ECU that controls these functions works so fast that the noise from the brakes being applied and released in such rapid pulses a bit unnerving.
