grinding when braking, locks up at stops, cold start won't go forward

2002 4Runner Limited Ed. Searched all through here and can't find the exact description. Problem is worse when cold, inconsistent, can go weeks without it happening and suddenly hits me on every startup and every stop and then quits for days or weeks again.

1. With start up (randomly) can't move forward and feels like brakes are engaged. Push on gas pedal, feels locked, clunks, surges forward. This only happens on start up, never when moving forward later after initial start and never again in the same day, only when it's sat overnight. Can go weeks and months with it not happening.

2. Slow braking sudden thunking sound and loud grind - brakes feel loose and then thunk and hard brake lurching the car while grinding sound takes over.

Can't reproduce for mechanics, in 4 times, they don't know what it is and one wants $1000 to replace what "MAY" be wrong - ABS control/magnet...he didn't sound like he knew anything and kept saying maybe. 2 other mechanics couldn't find it since we can't reproduce it, even when I take it in right after it starts happening, it stops! As if it knows!:wtf: Taking it to a Toyota lover and see what they say but would like some insight and ideas first. Thanks!

pull the abs fuse and see if that helps

I've seen that but where can I find out where the fuse is and how to do that... got away from working on my own cars from living in large cities. . . Willing but not proficient! Girlie city girl . . .:thanks:

under the hood one the right side behind the battery is where the fuse box sits, there are 4 plastic keeper tabs securing the inside part of the fuse box to the outside case part of the box. once you get the inside part out and expose the bottom of the fuse box the fuse was secured in there by 2 screws. hope that helps

I'll try it. Better than shelling out $1000 on a maybe! And I didn't mention that the ABS or VSC warning lights never have gone on...

Look and see if the rear axle seals are leaking. This is same complaint customers have at the shop and it's always leaking axle seals

X2- the diff fluid soaked shoes will stick to the drums pretty bad. The outside of the drums will be covered in gear oil and of course the diff fluid will be low. The seals are easy to change and then new brakes and fluid, hope all goes well.
