Groaning during shifting when cold

Not sure if anyone has encountered this but in the morning, when the Runner is cold and I shift from Park-->Drive or Reverse-->Drive (w/brakes applied) or whatever (I think y'all get the point), I notice a groaning coming mainly from the rear of the vehicle. Has anyone noticed this? I think it may be just cold brakes or something but I just want to make sure I don't have a bad transfer case or something.

Can't recall of anyone having this problem. Can you give a few more details about when it happens -- does it make it only while braking, or just starting from a stop (foot off the brake)?

Ummm...Ok. Let me see how to better describe this. Sitting in the garage in a cold, just started Runner. I put my foot on the brake, I release the e-brake, I shift into Reverse, the transmission shifts into gear (no issue there), there is a groan from what sounds like the brakes, mainly the rears. I back out of the garage, stop, some groaning (from it seems brakes). I shift from Reverse into Drive, same groaning. I drive down the road, stop, Runner warms up, no groaning when warm. Do you think it's just some cold brakes and maybe I need to have them cleaned and adjusted?
