Hey guys, i noticed today that when I went to leave school and started my truck up that the CEL and the VSC lights (3 total i think) all came on. I was baffled, because this is the first time in nearly 3 years that I have had ANY indicatorr lights come on.......
I drove home from school about 30mi, kinda disshevelled bc of the surprise and wonder.
Do you guys think I should just reset the ECU and see if they come back on? What do you think COULD cause this? i dont like it

I had a the same thing happen last week. It turned out that my girlfriend didn't put the gas cap back on. It reset itself after about three days. Not sure if its the same problem...........

Strange... as it all the same lights? (CEL, truck with skid marks underneath, vsc off and vsc trac, i believe)?
The truck is running fine, and I hope that its just some sort of fluke-ish type thing like that. Either way i have to go back to school in the morning, so im going to check the gas cap and reset the ecu most likely....


Whats strange is that no lights were on when I got to school 10:50am, but when I try and leave 9pm, the lights show..... wtf!

It could be the gas cap like what was said, but it could be an 02 sensor. Same thing happened to me after I had the sulfur TSB performed. I had to bring the truck back to get the o2 sensor replaced.

BTW the lights were not on when I left the dealership. They all lit up about 1 mile away. Turned around and complained at the dealer.

Did the lights come on immediately or after a couple of miles of driving? Sounds like it could be an O2 sensor. I have had two fail under warranty. Just be advised that VSC/TRAC is not disabled, so you will get wheel spin when you try to punch the throttle.

Those were the same lights that I had come on. My girlfriend drove it all day after she put gas in it with no problems, I got home a week later and was greeted with the light show.

Looks like VSC computer has a troble code. Read it with a reader and you'll find what wrong with it. Any local mechanic with OBDII reader can do it and it should be not more then couple bucks.
It can be anything from steering sensor or ABS line to more seriuos problem. Did you recently off-road or drove over rough terrain?

Maybe the alternator??? It's happened to me in the past, but instead, I was driving then all the lights came on. In my case, it was the alternator.

On the 4Runner, most codes which set a CEL "on" condition will automatically turn the VSC off and light the VSC indicator. So, this isn't necessarily a problem with the VSC (or in a lot of cases anything related to it). So, you need to find out what the actual code is which set the CEL, not necessarily anything with the VSC.

well this morning before departing I reset the ECU and checked/tightened the gas cap and so far ALL IS WELL. 60ish mi total today and nothing.

So i guess ill just see if it happens again.....

And oh yeah, I havent done any offroading in atleast a couple weeks (thx school!) so I cant imagine i damaged something... I did however have the truck in for its 50k service within the last week

this just happened to me too, on friday to be exact while i was on the highway, i called the dealer and he said that its ok to drive like that. but 3 days later sunday, everything went back to normal.
i just hit 27000mi. and im pissed cuz i dont think the dealer will be able to do anything now that the lights turned off.

the code SHOULD be stored.

I guess i never got back to my original post, but the reason my lights came on at this time was because i COOKED my carbon cannister, which is located near the spare on the underbody of the truck. This happened bc at the time i was running ONLY the borla muffler, which has upward pointed plumbing...thus the cooking :-D
It was a $600 fix but my dealer covered it.

But, back to your prob boss, the code should indeed still be there (so i was told by one of the service folk, since they couldnt see my truck that day). I had recently a similiar issue; about 1 week ago my CEL (and assoc. lights) came on, stayed on for 2 days and then went off.....which i thought was strange. Its funny cause the day i was going into the dealer with my CEL ON, as soon as I started her up to go to the doctor NO MORE lights, and its still light free. I think its really strange for a CEL to come on then go off on its own..
Ive got a service coming up soon, so im gonna have them check that out AND deal with a couple other issues (ive had a belt squeal 2x on startup for a few seconds, and i have some alt/battery/charging system or something prob). good luck, I HATE driving my truck when anything other than normal lights are on.
