Has anyone thought about the Emuwing kit for our Runners? Any idea of a kit? Or practicality? I would love this mod! As there are cabinets in those places in my rear cargo system.
Yea, I saw those. Ive searched everywhere. Was just seeing if anyone else thought about this. And had better luck.
Much better idea!
So I guess the first step would be to find a totaled shell i can cut the window frame out of to use as a template. Make a inner frame that would be sealed into the stock frame which would house the actual Gull Wing.
Remove a window and make a cast for a fiberglass mold. Super simple. Where it might get complicated is the finished product, how clean you want it to look. I bet a guy could work something out in a weekend.
Removing the window isn't as easily done as said.... I had an extra when i bought the donor frame for my frame swap. I tried all afternoon, ended up just getting a bandsaw and cutting it out for a friend. I got rid of what was left though so cant use that one. Aluminum would be the way to go. Or that thick Poly YodaTeq uses. I contacted YodaTeq and they said they have it on their list of things to do(3rd Gen Gullwind hatch) but that its not in the foreseeable future. So for now its to the drawing board. I see this Verry useful. Especially with Runners using rear swing tire carriers. Easy access.
I wouldn't want to use fiberglass in the situation. These gullwing kits traditional come with gas struts, and that added pressure may crack the fiberglass unless it's pretty thick. Making this from aluminum is a better option, and it'll most likely be lighter than the glass.
I've always want to make these, and this thread is pointing me in that direction now. I hate threads like this.
I'd forgo struts and go with a prop rod. Simpler to design and implement.
I was thinking more for the rear side windows, but nice.
