Guy Freaks Out over No Spare Tire

our 2009 Rav v6 sport had run flats and no spare.

personally I would never again buy a run flat vehicle again. the tires cost way to much.

My daughter has a BMW X5 with run flats. They're worn out at 25000 miles. She wants some off road tires for it but there is no place to put a spare. She has also become very disappointed with the car. Seems it's always in the shop for something. For an $80,000 car it's really a shame. It goes fast and looks nice - but kinda useless.

Acura MDX 2wd does NOT come with spare tire...but MDX with SH-AWD comes with spare. Just weird. :loco: If i had to guess, then i would think FWD will have spare because there is more room in the back...SH-AWD models have the rear differential. But, Acura does the opposite....

Maybe they figured your average AWD owner wouldn't realize the tire sizes need to match closely so instead of letting the owner put on whatever tire was available, they provided a correctly sized one to prevent drivetrain explosions?

i guess im one of the few people at the Houston Auto Show that opens the trunk/hatch and checks out the undercarriage looking for the spare tire compartment to see if it will fit a full size spare haha. no donuts/fill kits for me. And definitely no run-flats, way too expensive for how quick you must replace them.

but seriously? purchasing a vehicle without knowing whether it has a spare or not is on you and not the manufacturer. Don't flame the manufacturer for your stupidity, its not their fault you are an idiot.

yeah I knew the rav4 had run flats since most rav4 have the spare on the back and this one didn't.

in the end, the run flats were like $400 a piece to replace and rode rough since they were so stiff.

but it was a blast to drive during the summer. the face kids give you when you keep up with them in a puny rav4.

She bought a BMW, from what I understand from some fellow techs who specialize in BMW/Dealership Techs they are their more problematic models (no arguments from me since almost every X5 I have ever dealt with had issues.) Honestly I hope your daughter is leasing that thing, wouldn't do anything but leasing on those things.

The new Rav4's, some of the Siennas, and I think one or two other "sport" models now come only with RunFlats. Runflats are more expensive and while they do allow you to "run flat" you will need to still replace the tire after driving on them a short while as the sidewalls still do get damaged.

Run Flats are here to stay, they reduce weight and cost for the manufacturer; probably mostly for MPG reasons. So I am just laughing at this guy since most high end sport sedans/cars lack a proper spare tire. Then again it might have to do with the majority of their customers running spare donuts as regular tires...

BOF trucks and SUVs and some cars with AWD (notably Subies) are the last that have full sized spares because you will damage them if you don't.

I actually have a matched spare for my TE, but it's on a steelie rim.

The one time I test drove a BMW was in 08 when they had run-flat tires and the ride was harsh as hell.
