I didn't know manual transmission FJs were full-time 4x4? Even if it were, if all 4 wheels were spinning, what difference would it make? I'd say throw a new t-case in and enjoy the next 200k. Or is there something more going on here.....

Hopefully this answers some questions. A new transfer case and clutch were installed on my vehicle. I suggested a new vehicle and Toyota's response is as quoted. I'm not knowledgeable enough to know whether or not the transfer case and clutch would cover everything that may have been damaged (even if Toyota says it would) and the engineer I spoke with was not disagreeable at all to the idea of a replacement vehicle (which to me spoke volumes).

My suggestions for a solution included:

- A 2014 FJ with off-road and upgrade packages, with a dealer installed blacked out parts, TRD wheels and for Toyota to pay for a painted roof.

- A 2014 Trail Teams FJ re-painted on Toyota's dime.

- Keeping my loaner until the TRD Pro 4Runner came out this fall and working out a deal to pay the difference.

None of these ideas were accepted, so this is where I'm at. Like I said, I respect them offering to replace the vehicle, but I don't feel great about it. My guess is I'll just take the cash, but I'm disappointed about not having a car I really liked. It was only about a year old with around 17.5k miles on it.

How is it in any way this guy's fault? He loaned his car to the freakin' engineers that designed the thing, one has a reasonable expectation that they would know how to treat it. If a dealer left out your oil drain plug and your engine got fried, i'm pretty sure you'd be pissed too. But then, again, wouldn't that be your fault for bringing it to a dealer?
 
So, wait - WTF does this guy think happened on that dyno that doesn't happen every time he gets on the freeway? Unless there's some weirdness with the FJ center diff that I don't understand, what happened on that dyno would have happened to him while he was driving if he hadn't loaned his truck to Toyota.

This special cupcake needs to take his new tcase and a couple free oil changes and get on with his life.
 
His FJ Cruiser was a 6MT. It's a full time 4wheel drive.

According to the story, Toyota engineers put the vehicle on a 2WD dyno, so the rear wheels were spinning at highway speeds and the truck was essentially working as hard as it could to shift 100% power to the rear wheels when it normally operates at 60-40, according to normal parameters it can shift more power rearwards, but what Toyota did was essentially an abuse test on the t-case and center diff. It'd be the same if they put a Limited 4Runner or a Lexus GX on a rear wheel dyno.

There are 4WD dynos out there, and if the story is true Toyota engineers are dumbasses for not knowing the parameters of one of their own vehicles.

So the front wheels were prevented from spinning? That makes a little more sense.

I still don't understand why he doesn't let them replace the tcase and give him something for the trouble and get on with himself. He needs to quit his crying over how his sooper-speshul Trailteams grey FJ is ruined for life.

On the freeway all four wheels would be powered and spinning on a 6MT FJ Cruiser with 60% of the power to the back and 40% to the front.

On the dyno the front wheels were locked and the rear were getting 100% of the power--for the duration of the test, at highway speeds.

So that's what the fuuuudge did happen. The truck needed to be on a 4WD dyno.
 
I don't think I'm totally understanding everything here....

so is his FJ completely totaled? did these guys grenade the entire drivetrain? if its fixed and drivable and back to normal now,then whats the big deal? i don't see why he wants a brand new vehicle if they fixed everything they broke

unless the FJ is completely f**ked
 
i feel for the guy. He had a unique FJ and he just wants it back.

I'm confused as to why it can't be repaired and come with a warranty that would cover additional problems should they occur.

On the plus side, getting every penny you paid new, for a one year old vehicle is not so bad. Although losing the sub 2% interest rate kinda bites.
