Agreed, it's one of the trade offs you accept for the additional protection. The rough ride can be minimized by not airing up your E rated tires excessively. 35 psi is the min pressure for LT tires and as long as you're not exceeding the load carrying capacity of the tire at the min pressure you should only add pressure as you require to improve gas mileage/handling.

I've been running 38psi in my E rated tires on my two Tacomas for ~200K (combined) and don't find the ride to be excessively rough. For me I find the compromise to be well worth the extra protection, but I'm off-road a lot in areas with a lot of mesquite trees and sharp rocks......

A 4runner is too small to make load carrying a reason to run any LT.

Other than perhaps towing, toughness off-pavement is the only reason that makes sense.

If someone wants maximum toughness and doesn't mind the performance changes that come with a heavy tire, load E would be the way to go (though there are load Es available that are not all that heavy). The ride harshness differences between C and E are a very minor part of the story. The difference should be barely noticeable with equal air pressure.

High load range tires in their natural environment are run at very high pressures which is probably the reason for the exaggerated reputation of the harshness of load E tires.
