half black multi information LED display

The left side of the LED Multi Information Display (where Miles to empty or avg speed etc are displayed) has gone dark, or burnt over the weekend. The ride is a 2005 V6 4WD SR5, about 110,000 miles. Is this a fuse problem I can replace, or something bigger? I can't be the first one to have this problem, right? The right half, where the time is displayed, is fine.

Happened on mine, too. It's a tiny $3 bulb that just needs replacing. Take out the entire control panel (its one screw behind the storage tray underneath it), and take it into the parts center and they should be able to get you squared.

The bulbs should be able to be unlatched with a small screw driver once you have it out. They slide right in and clamp in place (if I recall correctly).

I think 90010-09015 is the Toyota part number for the bulb (have your parts department double check me).

Open your strorage bin, pull it out and up towards you. It will slide right out. Behind there is a philips head screw, remove it.

After that, grab the under side of the environmental control unit and give it a good yank. Don't be shy. It will almost feel like you're breaking it, but you aren't, the clips are just in there really tight.

Once it pops loose, just disconnect the 2-3 connectors on the back side of it and you're good. I can have it out of a 4runner in under 20 seconds I bet with the amount of times I've removed/reinstalled mine. :
 
Extremely easy to pull out the LCD screen. I have an '05 and have had to replace the bulbs twice due to one side being dark. I would replace both bulbs.
Toyota part# 90010-09017. I believe Toyota changed the bulb somewhat to beef up the contacts. This seems to be a pretty common problem.
Also seems like the new bulb doesn't completely twist all the way in due to the different contacts, but it twists in good enough.
 
at $3 a pop, I would recommend replacing all the bulbs at once. Save yourself the headache of having to do it again later since you will already have it apart.

If you are going to get several, I would take a look at Partznet.
 
Thanks all for the detailed info. Am doing it this weekend. My local dealer wants $6-9 / light so maybe i'll look elsewhere.

I know some have used LED to replace the bulb, maybe a little work. Do the LED replacement have the same form factor that just replace the blown bulb as is? Sounded like some tweaking is needed to get LED there. I'll pass on that.

fixed the display by replacing with the said part number from toyota dealership. radioshack didn't work as they couldn't find a match when i showed them the dead bulb. even they did, most likely they would have the tiny bulb insert without the socket so it would have been some work.

i took some pictures but really, just like everyone has said, yank the a/c control+display out carefully but surely. the new bulb appears to have improved contact, as suggested by some already.

it's tough to find the small part, especially on Sun, some parts depts were closed and others have reduced hours, some don't have them in stock at all.
 
This was a huge help and easy to get to the bulbs. Now I just need to find a bulb at one of the local dealers tomorrow and I'll be set. Thanks for the help on here guys...

Alright, im replacing my bulbs but i hit a brick wall. The screw behind the storage bin will not screw out. It just keeps on spinning and doesnt seem to be threaded into anything. I cant replace anything till i get that screw out. Anyone have any ideas?

I didn't see what this screw mates up with. But obviously, it's spinning. I don't think you can reach up because that part is solid behind the storage compartment. See if you can find a hole to stick a finger through. If not, let me know and I will take mine back apart and see if I can figure out what the screw screws into.

It literally took 10 minutes to fix.

Thanks to the others that posted this fix. I got the bulb at my local Toyota dealer. It was $3.54.

Casper,
If you look here at bulldogs post, 4th pic down, you can see the clip that the screw screws into. It's obviously broken. Not sure how to suggest how to get around this problem.

Thanks RickC, I was able to pry the screw out a tad so the thread would back the screw out. The screw had a gap in the thread so it just kept spinning. It finally came out and i was able to fix the bulb. A 5 min job was turned into a 30!! :cheers:
 
These bulbs from Radiohack also work for $1.99 a pair. You have to reuse the base from the stock bulbs and removed the old bulbs and insert these replacements.

They are sligltly smaller in size and about 10% dimmer than the stock ones.
