Half Moon RTV Type

I just ordered my parts to do my VCG's and forgot to throw in a tube of FIPG. The order already shipped, so ordering a tube of FIPG from them would require paying extra shipping. The half moons on my VZ are seeping like crazy and need to be resealed.

Can anyone recommend an equivalent product I can pick up from an auto store? I see numerous choices from Permatex.

I usually just use the ultra black or the high temp on the half moons but its usually what ever I already have on hand. just did my valve cover gaskets last week on my 99 sr5 and I just used the high temp for everything cause that's what I had. permatex makes it and you can get it from autozone

Ultra Grey or Black, with more success with the former. $5.

That Pennzoil Ultra can find the tiniest of potential leaks. Great oil though but hard to find here in the South.

Take a pic or two of the valve train.

If you live anywhere near a dealer I suggest picking up the Toyota FIPG. I've used it and the Permatex products before, including the copper formula.

Reason why I recommend FIPG: it sets in 15 min and completely dry in one hour on most applications. The Permatex products set in usually one hour and take up to 8 hours to dry. Makes a different if you are making repairs on the fly like I do and need to use the vehicle again soon.

Permatex "The Right Stuff". I hardly use anything else anymore.

Same here. I don't need the FIPG Kool-Aid.

It's a Permatex product and doesn't need 8hrs to set up. In fact, the directions state to assemble the parts within five minutes of application. It's available in any auto parts store too.

I don't mean you have to let it sit there before applying, it's rather a matter of how long you have to wait before running the vehicle again, or risk washing away your gasket material. I like to (have to) test my vehicles soon after applying since it's my primary vehicle.

Pretty sure the back of my can of black Right Stuff says it's ready to go immediately. I can tell you that's how I've been using it. I've never waiting to fill a diff with gear oil after using Right Stuff on the third. I've filled the crankcase with oil immediately after resealing the oil pan, too. Never any leaks, at least not so far. :)

Same here. Used it multiple times on my Jeep diffs and valve covers, 4Runner valve covers (30k miles now), Ford pickups and Kenworth T800 without a single leak.

Unrelated here, but kinda on-topic.

Can you differentiate between a VCG leak and a half-moon leak without the VC's off?

Thanks for the input everyone. My mechanic is actually doing the labor. There's no way as a full-time student and in 20 degree weather that I am attempting VCG's myself.

LittleCaesar, That Pennzoil Ultra really does. I had been using 5W30 from the yellow bottle with OEM filters from the dealer lot to 105k-ish. I started getting seepage when I switched to Platinum 6-7 years ago and it got even worse with Ultra. I'm at 118k now. I have held it off this long only because this truck is driven so infrequently. I plan on supercharging soon so I figure that I'd might as well get everything baselined. I plan on going with Rotella 5W40 soon.

My friend in Sea Bright said it is the coldest Jersey February in a long time, may even on record.

I got my 4runner at 72,000 miles, at 88,000 I started using Ultra and stopped at 97,000 miles. Only thing used before was Mobil 1 basic and bulk dino at 7500 miles from the previous owner. Every time I drained the Ultra the oil was black at 5000 miles. It even made my drive train clatter in the morning. But it cleaned up the internals:

I've been around that area. I'm closer to Manhattan though. It is still insanely cold nonetheless. I never heard any valve clatter when using the Ultra. I probably would have freaked if I heard that lol. I noticed the oil coming out fairly black too. I'm not sure what it looked like before switching so who knows. It always looked clean under the oil cap. My dad is always pretty diligent with the oil changes and he's been giving it the Italian tuneup since he drove it off Atlanta Toyota's lot.
