Ham Radio Install

So i have seen a few installs on the site with different rigs and locations. I am in the process of installing a new rig in my 4runner. I currently have an Alinco dr610 however I am looking over the Yaseu 8800r. They are offering a remote head kit till end of month which would be perfect.

So far I have the antenna on a mag mount and the power run though the firewall.

I have attached two photos and will update as the process continues. I hope to have the remote head on either machine installed in the sunglass drop down pocket near the ceilings upper lights.

So power successfully added to rig. A bit of a challenge. When I went though the firewall I pulled the huge gasket inward a little. That took some doing to get it back into place. Got that done last night. Then today when I put on the round ends to attach for ground and dc the connections did not work out so well. The plugs i bought turned out needed to be sodered in addition to being crimped. I did not see that when I bought them. The end result was a poor connection and a lack or 13 volts on the other end. A little debugging with the meter and I spotted the problem. A quick trip to autozone to procure new tips, a quick cut and crimp for the new ones, 13 volts. Ahw...

I went with a differnt antenna today.. the one you saw in the picture is this one from commet.

I ran the mag mount antenna wire under the trim pieces on the driver side... pulled up real easy. Ran them to the drivers door then turned right to end under the seat.

I added in this remote speaker to bring the audio from under the seat to else where.

I used this remote cable to leave the main unit under the seat and bring the head unit to the main console.

I put a few piece of velcro to attach the head to the open area on the arm mount.

So things yet to still do...
1. need to install microphone. I ordered from GRE i think 650-591-1400. They are the folks that handle parts for Alinco. My old mic sufford a slice in the cable and has been intermitten on audio. $95 bills in case anyone was intersted.. .a lot for the mic considering you can order a new rig for 300.
2. Install mic and test TX. So far RX sounds good.. at least as much as I can get from within my garage.

I might be able to use my HT to cross repeat on the air... oh well.. I guess I will just wait.. if mic does not solve issue then I will be ordering the FT8800r

New mic from alinco received today I have an old dr610 and the mic died. The current model dr635t mic is backward compatible. Good news! 95 later and 2 days its on the rig. Not much reception in the garage so I may have to pull it out onto drive way for decent tx rx.

Not sure about that but I am waiting for the new Avmap G6 to be released.
