With the capabilities of most new smart phones, I see very little point in owning a seperate phone, camera, gps, and so on. Just upgrade your phone
I've been a Garmin 60CSX user for several years. It is by far the best hand held for hiking, reception and all of the other reasons already listed in other responses.
Having said that, there are many reasons to have a hand held GPS over a cell phone when you're out in the woods. First and foremost is battery life. I have used my 60CSX on a two week backpacking trek on the same set of batteries (2 AA's). The ability to set waypoints, create a route with waypoints on your computer and transfer to your handheld, download your tracks and waypoints to your computer (and to Google Earth), and the list goes on.
Someone farther up the page mentioned the 62 series replacing the 60 series with a few new bells and whistles, but I couldn't agree more that if you can find a 60CSX, buy it. They are still around and for the price they are going for, it's the best performance value out there.
