Hanna Quality: Worth it or not???

So I want bolt on sliders, I have seen Hanna's products in person, I've got cash in hand and Ken seems totally uninterested in actually selling any to me. :confused:

I have gotten exactly two responses from him since I first emailed him on May 12th. The first response took three days, the second took 9 days and no response yet to my inquiry about ordering and method of payment of 6 days ago.

One great guy here on the forum took the time to show me his sliders and he had a positive experience. Anyone else have any ideas about this? :help:

IIRC then the ARB bumper and sliders were teasers and never made it into production. Apparently ARB is only now waking up because Shrockworks wil have a front bumper out in a matter of weeks. Competition helps!

Shrockworks is apparently offering a bolt-on slider that somehow Nitrous Enterprises is linked to. I've read enough on all of the Toyota forums that I do not want to deal with Nitrous at all.


Regarding the sliders:

Although welding on sliders saves weight and are simple, you have to own the equipment or pay somebody to do your welding. Once on, you have to cut, grind or burn them off to replace or repair.

Right now I like the idea of something that is easily reversable.

Ken Hanna called me today and I have mailed him a check. Now I have to wait a bit.....
 
My check was never cashed and after a few weeks I called and wrote and called without answer.

So four weeks ago I got this "I am so sorry and let me promise to make it up" call from Ken. He swears on a stack of FJ-40 motors that he never got my check but that he could deliver new sliders in 4 weeks or less. I even PayPal'ed the entire amount up front on July 29th.

I said OK, but 4 weeks is it. About a week ago I tried checking in and he swore that they were built and would be shipped last Tuesday.

Yeah. :confused: :confused:

Another excuse!

"Oh, they came too late on Tuesday from the powder coater and I could not ship them before I went on shift (he's a firefighter). I swear they'll ship first thing Monday."

He never called or e-mailed to let me know he was hanging me out to dry again. Now I have been painted into a corner and I don't have time to order from Shrockworks and get their sliders without another 3 - 4 week delay.
 
This should be an end to my last three and a half months of whining as well as be informative for anyone looking to order semi-custom parts for their rig.

Early on I decided that I wanted bolt-on sliders after reading all of the pros and cons related to weld-on sliders. Almost as early I decided I wanted Hanna Quality (HQ) sliders. Hanna's manufacturing reputation is solid. When I saw a pair mounted on a 4Runner I was sold. As a side note, when I complained about him there were many who wrote to defend him as his fans are Legion.

My earliest e-mail to HQ was May 12th. That should give you an idea of the ups and downs leading to actually bolting the sliders on today, August 29th. In the intervening three and half months I sent a lot of e-mails, a lot of them unanswered or maybe incompletely answered, likely in great haste.

HQ is a one-man show which is apparently quite common for the non-ARB sized companies. It is also not his only job so there is no one else to watch e-mail and the voice mail when he is away. Therefore it is up to you to cheerfully stay in touch... He only calls from his office and I don't know how often he checks his voice mails.

Keep copies of all of your e-mails, including the ones that you send. If there are phone calls, take notes and date them. Keep it all in one place along with web page printouts as web sites go down too.

Sliders are essentially built to order so be ready to accept unplanned delays that you or the builder cannot control. Ken Hanna is a stickler for quality so they are built right. However, if his suppliers don't deliver, then you don't get your parts.

Moral: don't plan a trip around some custom order. Wait until they are bolted on and proven.

My HQ sliders bolted on almost like OEM parts. The only headache was no printed instructions so I had to fuss a lot to figure out the easy way to get the last U-bolt in next to the gas tank.

Use PayPal or a credit card. I had a check get lost. First time in 36 years, but sh*t happens.

I can add more as I think of it but this is a good start.
 
I had a very similar experience with Hanna Quality. He flat out refused to sell me anything claiming the '06 was different from the '05 and he had no time to make anything for me.

That is why I went to Stubb's Welding. Richard (Stubb's Welding)then informs me he could discern NO DIFFERENCES between the two model years.

Hanna Quality did state that he was backed up a solid year from actually shipping product from the time of order. He was either wrong or lying about the differences between the two models.

Maybe there were changes to where the 2006 frame welds were or something like that?

I have to say that mine were an exact fit and that you could not move them more than a quarter inch forward to adjust the position.

I'll bet for weld on sliders there was no difference. If you ever get a chance take a look at the way the Hannas fit onto the frame of an '05. If I get a chance I'll sneak a look underneath an '06 and see what I think.

thanks. let me know what you find. Richard went to a Toyota dealership and looked at a '06 and said there was no difference according to his specks.

My experience with Ken..

7/3 - I sent an email asking if he still made 05 4th gen silders.

7/3 - Email response from Ken, yes he still makes them, 4 week wait.

7/21 - I decided I wanted Hanna sliders. I emailed residential and business shipping addresses, asked for a shipping quote. I also asked about payment infomrmation.


7/21 - Email response from Ken with quote and payment info.


7/24 - I mailed full payment USPS Priority.


8/3 - Check cleared. I'm expecting 4 weeks from 8/7. Plus a week shipping. Maybe the week of 9/10 I'll get them.

Note - I have not asked Ken for any updates. I've been travleing (no off-roading) so I'm not pressed to get them.

Yes!

Install the passenger side first.

If you have a couple of floor jacks to get the thing up to optimum height or a helper it makes life easier.

Try to have a die available to run over the U-bolt threads in case you whack them accidentally

Before you bolt up the driver's side, get a screwdriver in place to unclip the brake lines I mentioned. They run on top of the frame rail, next to the gas tank. Both plug into a plastic clip roughly behind and above where you will place the U-bolt.

Look at how the Hanna sliders butt up against the frame. Note the tabs and their direction. The U-bolt needs to swing down and over these tabs before poking through the mounting hole. A plastic hammer is handy to whack them into place as mine were a tight fit.

Leave the plastic wrap on the outer rails until you are done.

No instruction = no torque values?

The instructions were e-mailed to me after I left that post and long after I had figured things out on my own. I don't think that torque values were even mentioned.

Even zipped I cannot attach the file here so e-mail me for a copy.

I understand your concern but before you rush to judge us you should look at this link and talk to Nitrous about correcting the verbage that implies that Shrockworks is somehow still affiliated.
