Hardwiring A GPS Unit to your 4Runner

Have any of you guys had any luck hardwiring your GPS units to your dash? I bought a mighty large gps unit --> Amazon.com: Magellan RoadMate 1700 7-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator -- and have no idea where to put it in my SR5? Any ideas? Thanks!

Hmmm... not sure of the way the 5th gen's dash is made, but I, for one, prefer to put my GPS on the left side of the cluster.

No huge blind spot in the middle of the windshield, and wires are easier to conceal.

In my Subaru, I hardwired mine using a piggyback fuse holder on top of another accessory fuse, and ran the wire between the corner of the dashboard and the A-pillar trim (removing the trim often gives you some space to wiggle the wire through).

So when I remove it, the only thing in sight is a tiny piece of wire than I can pretty much push down flush with the base of the windshield.

i bought the same GPS for my fiance. it's huge!
this is a vent-mount that i bought also: Amazon.com: ARKON CM047-ST2-RVC Magellan, Nextar, HP Removable Swivel Air Vent Mount: Electronics

i'll be using this vent mount to mount this sucker on the vent to the left of the hazard button. that way, it won't create a blind spot or block any vital buttons/dials...

I highly recommend the roadmate 1700, you won't be disappointed!
As for the vent-mount, i can't recommend it yet as i am still waiting to take delivery of my T4R so i haven't tried it out yet but will let you know asap...

Same here, left corner of winshield, ran the cable through the weatherstripping (just give it a tug) and piggybacked in to the ignition fuse.

Im trying to figure out how I can run the power plug from the glove compartment up through the windshield defroster vents. Otherwise Ill just pull it out and have a wire hanging from the glove compartment when in use.

Mount GPS in Sunglass Holder?

In my 2000 SR5 I rarely (if ever) actually used my sunglass holder to hold sunglasses or other items. It often went empty. Driving around this AM I was thinking about this thread and...

I am wondering if it is possible to cut out the "sunglass holder" portion and mount a GPS unit via double-sided tape. There appears to be enough room and given there is already power run to that portion of the console, one could easily hide the wires?

To use the GPS simply press the holder to drop down and when not in use... push it back up.

I may have to look into this more.

Anything is possible.....that being said.....I think it would too much of a neck strain to look UP there to see the GPS screen if you are trying to use it for navigation in an unknown area. If you just want to use it for audio directions that would be fine I think. I keep my phone (droid) in my cup holder, set the destination and just listen to when I need to turn, never use the display. Then again maybe we should ditch all the electronics, real men don need directions!
