Has Anyone Cut Off Resonator?

I read several threads but haven't found a straight answer.
Can you cut the resonator off and leave short and hidden under the veh? Or does the exhaust need to be routed away from the vehicle w/ a new tailpipe?

I'm working on CAI and exhaust, but don't want anything crazy loud, just slightly more aggressive. Looking at several options. I just thought if I could increase the db slightly by 5 mins of cutting off the resonator I would try that first. Thanks! Anyone have a good pic of their aftermarket exhaust?

Several guys have. The ones I have talked to took it to an exhaust shop, had them cut off the resonator, then route the exhaust behind the tire. I've looked into just cutting it off and using a turn down tip, but haven't gotten a clear answer one way or another. I know back in my Mustang days, a lot of us ran our cars with dumped exhausts, so I don't see any harm in it. Here's a thread I have on the subject. Yeah, I read over that one as well. I'm tempted to cut the resonator off w/ a sawzall and be done with it for now...I can always re route wherever needed w/ a new tailpipe and new tip...hummmmm

Yea, I'm thinking hard about the same thing. Mine looks better with the paint, but that's only temporary until I find a decent exhaust shop locally (or get brave and cut it myself). You've got me thinking about cutting it off, and adding a turn down tip (like this) to help get the exhaust out away from the vehicle.

well you want a fantastic exhaust shop. try A.P.E. Arkansas Performance Exhaust in sherwood. not sure where your at but this is where id take mine. cant beat the professionalism and knwledge thes guys have on exhausts. seriously you tell em what you want they will get you exactly that.

Will any of the exhaust tips change the sound? I wouldn't think so but I saw some larger "pipe" style tips at autozone today. Wondering what it would sound like if I cut the resonator off and fitted a new bigger tip on the exposed pipe...It wouldn't very visible and sticking out the side, but if the combination of the two gave me more rumble it might be worth $20. Any ideas?

i cut off my resonator and welded and elbow pipe on, routing the exhaust behind the passenger rear tire, mpg has gone up 1mpg and it sounds more aggressive, not obnoxiously so but sounds much better. it cost me $7 all together (elbow pipe from autozone)

MPG went up? Wonder why? I wouldn't think that would affect it at all. Yes, pls get a pic up for me. I can weld/clamp a elbow on also, maybe that's the ticket...

i cut off my resonator and muffler and got and my pipe dumps right in front of the rear axle. i have the v8, and that shit is deep and crazy loud, but i love it

cut off the resonator and you will hear no difference. Cut off the muffler and then you got yourself some rumble (probably more than you want). Cut off those two and the two post-cats, and you really got some noise

Thanks for the info. I'm not going to cut mine off just yet if there will be little or no difference. I'll have to shop around and find the right aftermarket exhaust for me. I like the extra noise when I get on the gas, but don't want any or much drone when cruising. I'll look into the flowmaster 50 series (cheap) and if all else fails Borla exhaust but it will be costly.

If that's what you are going for then I would say flowmaster 50 SUV is bueno.

I don't believe that anyone could get +1 mpg by just cutting the resonator off unless that's what you were trying to prove (changing driving style). I cut mine off and just had the pipe chilin right above the rear axle pointed down slightly because IMO the stock exhaust coming out the back looks terrible. I got a Magnaflow muffler about 3 weeks ago and it is just a muffler with a turn down on it, so the exhaust ends at about the middle of the car. People will try to tell you that this is going to cause a bad drone, but it doesn't. The magnaflow is not really loud, just adds a little umph. Now taking the HUGE stock muffler out a replacing it with something MAX 1/3 of the stock one's size has given me almost +1 mpg. I have the V8 and have a K&N drop in filter (the only engine mods I have done).

You still have the sulfur smell? You have the same year and model and my sulfur smell was looong gone in 2005.

I removed mine after smashing it twice...had a local muffler shop chop it off and throw a 90 deg elbow right behind the tire. Done! Though I don't hear any real difference. Same MPGs...same sound....the benefit is it improved my depature angle...and i don't keep smashing it haha.
