Has anyone ever participated in a gun buyback program?

I'm writing my thesis on these and I know we have a lot of gun guys on here, just wondering if anyone has personal experience with them

I have a hard time letting go of mine... especially considering resale is not that great if it isn't a collectible. I've been looking for one to dump an old shotgun for the right exchange rate. :D

I'm still forming my whole thesis but all the data points to them as being useless for reasons like that.


and I just wanna prove all the liberals at my school wrong :lmao:
 
Really the only reason I would see people actually using these programs is to anonymously dispose of dirty guns or to get more for it than they would be able to otherwise. I'm hoping my stolen Glock might reappear some day...

seattle, 1996, almost 2k guns recovered, less than 1.8% were stolen of the 85+% that had serials

glocks are the least likely to be turned in at buybacks according to another study in Milwaukee in 02 that looked at buybacks in the mid 90s

so smart money says no :pout:
 
Do a google search on LAPD and LA County Sheriff gun buy back programs and see what you find. I remember seeing on the local news that they recovered AT4's and some crazy shit but it was mostly old and rusted out shot guns etc. They were getting 100 dollar vouchers to local supermarkets or something like that.

The Libs will always be well..... Read on killing and on combat one day. It will change your life and the way you think, promise you that. I always bring that up in my classes and get pretty good responses in most cases.

because of Colorado's new strict gun laws, they have all but canceled gun buy backs because hey would have to do a background check on every gun turned in and the person turning it in.

I just had a 12 page chunk of it due today and I was thinking about it after I turned it in. Thanks for the heads up, i'll definitely look into it. The whole thing is due in the spring. What was due today was really just an evaluation of prior literature/studies on buybacks as a whole. For my actual thesis I have a few ideas, the front runner being my own study on the effect of incentives on buybacks and state run v. community run programs (like those started by churches)

I'd be interested to know the market value of the remaining 83.2% and if it was more/less than the buyback offer.
 
I think they're great. If I had an old piece of junk lying around I could take it down there and sell it, then use that money to go towards a new carry piece.

I have considered handing over POS guns that don't work anymore (rusted, broken trash like some cheap 38 Spcl revolvers I've had rattling around in the attic for God knows how long) and getting way too much money for them at the cost of the state, but the principle of the government buying back guns from the people under the auspices of "public safety" really bothers me so I've never done it.
 
I saw one where someone turned in an old SAM or RPG launcher tube, I think they figured out it must have been a soldier's souvineer. Sadly I don't have any evidence for you, but the consensus on some other gun forums it's that it's almost all zip guns, broken guns, etc. You get the rare person that has suddenly decided post-public-shooting that guns are bad and they turn in their grandfather's WWII 1911 or something.
 
Glad I never had to write any of those 12 page papers... had a high school art teacher make us write a 10-pager "in preparation for college" but he cut it in half. I never had to write anything longer than 4 pages in college. hah.
