Has anyone installed tweeters in a 4th gen using Ebay adapters?

Yes...they will work. But they WILL have to be trimmed. I already trimmed one of mine, then realized Hertz tweeters came with a little bracket/can that allows you to attach to the stock location holes. I can get a picture for you tomorrow if you like.

If you want mine you can have them. Like I said one is already trimmed out to a Hertz tweeter size so that one may not work. I would check with what tweeters you buy to see if they come with adapters, or go buy some metal stripping and make your own. Not too tough.
 
I saw your work in my thread searches, I have to say I'm a bit intimidated by it :) That's why I appreciated the simplicity of the adapters on ebay!

Dude, I'd love to see pictures! I've never heard of Hertz tweeters.
 
It really is a lot easier than you would think! I think I haven't heard of anyone doing this just for that factor alone. But seriously, you will be amazed!!! If you ever have some ?'s or need advice on this just PM me or search my original thread.
 
get a peice of 1/4inch mdf, trace the stock tweeter on it , and make a template, then cut that out, and then get the new tweeter, venter the hole and mark and cut, its alot cheaper.

McGinnis, keep an eye out on Thursday and I'll be posting up a whole "build" thread of my stereo install. I'll PM you some pics tomorrow tho of the tweeter brackets Hertz provided.

riceandpho...I don't know if it is exactly "a lot" cheaper as a 1/4" MDF piece is about $6-$8 at Lowes or HD (which NEITHER of mine had in Yuba City or Roseville) + gas to drive there. And with the ones on ebay you still have to trim. I really wasn't all that impressed with his rear door and front 6x9 adapters. I'd go Schosche or make my own next time. I just couldn't find what I needed and was sick of looking. I do have to make an adapter for my sub tho, so I'll be doing a little wood work. :-\ Just can't wait to be done with all the sound deadening. Tideous...but worth it I hope.

Interesting that you say this as I was planning on going his way to get the 6x9 adapters for the front. Can I ask why you didn't like them? Surely they're not flimsy are they? They sure look like they can get the job done.

Oh...absolutely they can. They do take some trimming...at least they did on the Hertz's. They had to be trimmed on the outer ring a couple mm to clear the basket and then on the inner ring that mounts to the door a couple mm to give a bit more clearance for the wire hookups. Good thing is the stuff is easy to trim with a dremel. The rear doors were the same way.

I emailed him and asked for a package deal. I think he gave me free shipping or something like that for all three.
 
So did you end up using them on the 6x9 front doors though and on the 6.5 rears? I know you're using the hertz adapters for the tweeters now.
 
I'm warming up ever so slightly to the idea of the 3.5's in the existing locations. I'm just nervous about the "hammering" of the door panel. I can just see myself breaking a window.
 
Nah you won't break it. Have a buddy with you to help hold the door steady, it'll make it a little easier. But seriously, if you're going to go through all the effort to make custom tweeter brackets, I would consider this easier, quicker, and more worth it.

Need a hammer with a long neck helps (Leave the bracket in place to make the rough outline, take it off to dent the panel in more).

Get some 1200, 1500 grit sand paper to clean up the area, and repaint.

Sheet metal screws.

Find a 3.5" speaker with a Mounting Depth of 1-1/2" or less. My Infinity's pretty much take the depth to the max.
 
Oh BTW, while you have the door panel off, trim any excess flashing (plastic excess) from around the grill opening for the speaker. Just sand it down, or to make your life easier, you a Dremel to grind it down.
 
I've decided to go the "ghetto" route and use some plumbers strap. It's going to be easy and will insure a good fit. It's also helpful that nobody sees it once the door panel is on.

Good choice! That works and saves $$$. If my Hertz didn't come with brackets and din't buy those fleabay brackets that' what I would've done. It works!
 
u should put some of that foam stuff around the ring and the speaker itself, help seal out all the loose holes and gaps, trust me i dynamated all the doors in and out and have a solid ass door,closes like mercedez now. plus u get moe midbass.
