Has anyone replaced the back up lights?

I agree the stock backup lights suck. I've been looking into auxiliary lights to upgrade mine. This would be a cleaner and cheaper solution - I wish they provided some sort of comparison with the light output of the incandescent bulb it's designed to replace.
 
I recently changed my license plate bulbs out for LED's along with my interior lights from VLEDS. The plate LED's are really bright compared to stock lighting. I plan on replacing the stock back up lights for the reasons that have already been mentioned above. I have no doubts that these will help seeing at night.
 
I've got the V-LED reverse lights and its a dramatic improvement over stock, but it's still minimal at best. Auxillary lighting is the way to go for real lighting power.
 
I went with these V-LEDS Part ID: 194_8_HP_W ,and I believe the radial firing LED's are pretty much useless in this application. Im getting all of my light from the forward firing LED's. The light output is far superior to the standard filament style bulb IMO.
 
Kinda unusual but do they make something that goes right into the trailer hitch and 6 pin connector? I know they make things that light up as an additional brake light when the brake is depressed, but what about one that only lights up when reverse is engaged.

Although I have never towed, I assume the reverse signal is passed through that connector and perhaps someone made something to take advantage of it..

Interesting. I thought radial LED's would bounce off the reflector more. I need to look at the lens. It looks like the ones you used are rated at 16 lumens. They now have ones rated up to 160 lumens. I'm probably going to go with 3 watt 120 lumens to avoid heat issues. Its a shame that the 4 watt 160 lumens are half off, but they might melt the housing.
 
There is a product that just plugs into the trailer plug and is an aux reverse light. The trouble with the 4th gen is that our plug is at an angle and the light would shoot sideways.

There also are slip on lights that mount into the hitch and use the trailer wiring, but frankly they are ugly and expensive for what they are. I'm looking to keep things as clean as possible.

4watts can't get hot enough IMHO to do any damage.... I ran special reverse lights in my Trooper, they were 50 watts. They never melted anything, they're still in it. That's the beauty of LED's, lots of light with little current draw. Low current draw equals low heat.

Well, according to VLED's their 4 watt's can't be run for more than 15 minutes or they might fail. "WARNING!
Due to the serious output of this bulb it will get too hot if left on for long periods
of time and will quickly fail. Do not run for more than 15 minutes at a time.
When we say High Power we mean it!"

Ah, I get it. I thought you meant melt the lens on the T4R or something. I can understand the limitation for the bulb itself.

They might be really good. In the most bizarre situation the reverse lights would be on for under five minutes, most of the time under 50seconds.

plenty of guys who went the aux. lights route. many are small with 50w bulbs, but some can be replaced with 100w. the black stealth ones are nice , forgot the brand tho. ebay has em cheap. these are working fine for me so far , & they are a big help with seeing behind you

I might be a little paranoid. The rear fog's on my Rover started to melt away with the stock bulbs. British electrical engineering!

I agree, for 99% of the time, reverse lights are used for less than a minute. If they melt away its an excuse for me to go with LED tails. I'll place an order for the bright ones, if they fail its less than 30 bucks.
