Has anyone replaced the speaker in the dash?

Hi there. I have been trying to find out what size the speaker in the dash of the 4th gens with the JBL is. I have searched the forums and haven't found any write ups. Crutchfield told me that the speaker is a custom size therefore the cannot suggest any replacements.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated as my speaker currently sounds like crap.

While you have to remove it from the bottom (by taking the radio out) the plastic grill on top just pops off. Pop that off and measure the cone.

Don't meant to hijack, but where can I get a new grill for the top of the speaker? Anyone know?

The size of center speaker is exactly the same as front tweeters, they are same speakers in fact, didn't measure the size of them when I pulled them out. That area now houses my steering wheel control module and other wires from my stereo :thumb3:

I don't think it is a tweeter though as it currently plays what sounds like a full range and tweeters are just for high frequencies right? If no one has replaced it, I'll just pull it out like you did I guess

I'm almost positive it's not a tweeter. Personally I would just get a small speaker like this and make a bracket for it.

Also the amp poses another problem since you'd need a 5 channel amp that supports a center channel instead of a subwoofer which is expensive compared to a 4 channel amp.

Honestly I thought about it but ended up just disconnecting it. One day I'll hook it up to my CB. I also prefer a rear seated soundstage which a center channel wouldn't help. I'm obviously not a professional so I'd ask Crutchfield this is just my 2 c.

You can be "almost positive" but I'm 100% sure it is a tweeter because I removed all JBL junk myself personally (my was 10 speaker JBL Synthesis). It is a tweeter, take the center grill out and have a look LOL

Yea that's not a tweeter. It's a small full range speaker, not unlike the ones that are in your front doors. They play a lower range of frequencies, maybe 800-8khz

I've replaced them with standard 3.5" coaxial speakers, even 4" in some.

I don't think the speaker is an odd size, but it is attached to a bracket that you would have to fabricate. I wouldn't waste time replacing it unless you were replacing the amp as well. When I upgraded mine, I just removed it because it allowed for my nav unit to get better air flow. I did not notice any difference in sound at all. The only real value of a center speaker would be if you were watching movies and wanted a center channel speaker.

Left channel and right channel. That is all. How will you hook up that speaker? What the purpose of it? Center channel is completely unnecessary in automotive application

I addressed that in my original post that it is unnecessary for many and difficult. I'm just trying to help out this guy I'm not saying it's something I would do.

Original sub is NOT dual voice coil. If it would be dual voice coil it would have two sets of terminals, correct (like JL sub on the left, dual voice coil)? It does not. Original sub has only 1 set of terminals, single voice coil 8". Didn't seen any resistance markings on it.

One other question. The front "tweeters" are not really tweeters right? Are they receiving a full range signal and crossed over by a crossover in the door or is the signal being mixed at the amp for those "tweeters"?

Sigh. Since production started in 2002, pretty much any question you can come up with has been asked...search is your friend.

The "tweeters" are full range 65mm drivers. Crossover is an inline cap...essentially a bass blocker. Based on my own experience, I'd guestimate the lower cutoff at ~200Hz. My center speaker pulls double duty as the bluetooth speaker for calls and does well on male voices.

Not sure what Para pulled out of his subwoofer enclosure, but Toyota/JBL themselves stated the subwoofer was a DVC. If you look at a factory wiring diagram you'll see two output channels from the amp are connected to the sub.

If someone's keeping the factory amp, the center speaker is quite useful since the DSP (bass, treble, surround, sub-out, etc.) is all done in the amp, not the head. Since some questioning its merit clearly have a little home theater experience. Have you not ever tried applying Dolby Pro Logic to a stereo signal? That's what JBL's doing in the 4Runner, except they're probably using a version of Logic7 algorithm as a member of the Harman group. With the factory amp, even if you set "surround=off" in the head unit, some sound is still routed to the center. With "surround=on", you get even more signal to the center.

I can't comment on what frequencies front tweeters play since I have no means of measuring that. There is no OEM crossovers in the doors to be found. I suspect all "cutting" to specific frequencies happening within OEM amplifier. And yes, judging by some additional photos found online, OEM subwoofer appears to be dual voice coils. On someone's other photos I can see two sets of terminals, I was just going by my memory which obviously failed me

The factory tweeters, as in most applications, have an onboard resistor which allows only highs to play through. Some old schoolers call them "bass blockers", which is exactly what they do. :thumb:
