Has anyone suprcharged or turbo'd a 3rd gen 4Runner?

I have a 2000 4Runner 2.7 L. I was wondering if it was possible for me to put a turbo o supercharger on it. I know it's been done with the 3.4 engine but I havent seen anything with the 2.7. Thanks.

I remember a while back TRD made a supercharger for the 2.7 but discontinued it. Since you have a 2.7 I would really look into a turbo set up because I have read that they handle boost really well! Good luck man!

I don't mean to be a downer but why try and turbo a 2.7L? It's not my truck, but if I were in your position I'd save up/sell the vehicle and buy a 3.4L, or splurge and find one with a supercharger.

If my memory is correct, a 2.7L is 150 HP, while the 3.4L is 183 HP. With a supercharger on it, it gains a maximum of 75 HP on top of that. And that's a really easy setup, no fabrication/welding needed. Even if you just got a stock 3.4L you've just gained 33 HP.

I started messing around with the 3.0L 3VZ-E and realized there were no performance gains to be had with that engine. So I saved up and bought the current 4Runner that I have since it's a blast to drive and I still have great snow/4x4 capability.

I appreciate the thought but I have already done a few things to my car that I would like to keep. It has a brand new head unit as well as new speakers. I like my car and don't really want to sell it and get another car. I'v only had the car for about a year and a half too and only have the money to upgrade. I'm not looking to turn it into a monster, just make it better than it already is. I'm going to get a CAI and new headers as well. POSSIBLY in the distant future, I will maybe do an engine swap and put in a 3.4 L but il have to look into that some more.

That makes sense, sounds like you've already begun to make it your own. Then more power to you! Like others mentioned, there are superchargers out there made for the 2.7L that would be easier than a turbo (it's a lot of fab work) but there's less performance gains in a S/C than a turbo. IMO a S/C is best if you want to go off-roading though since you get instant power even at low RPM's.

If this rig is also your daily driver I highly recommend putting on a new cat-back system with a high-flow muffler like from Borla and increase the piping size up 1/4 of an inch. You'll get better MPG's and a boost in performance which increase exponentially if you have forced induction. Did that even on my N/A Pickup and gains 20% better MPG's and a small HP boost. It's not talked about much on 4x4 forums but it's pretty much the first thing you do when modding any Sedan/Coupe out there for better performance. Plus the gas savings will pay off your initial install costs.

I am kind of on board with gamefreakgc, on this one. My 4 Runner is a 3.4L and if I had the time and my wife wasn't a freak about the differenc ein cost of fuel (regular as compared to premium) I would be doing a supercharger to mine. The upgrade would take a 3.4 engine to 251 hp and that is very significant from the facotry 178 hp on the 3.4L. However, you could look for a 3.4 engine and tranny out of a wreck, to interchange in yours, and gain a large improvement for a vehicle that you really like.

Thanks man. I will definetly look into a new catback system. I have been looking online for a supercharger for my car but haven't been able to find one yet. TRD discontinued them for my car vid you happen to see one let me know. I would greatly appreciate it!

Yeah. Would I find something like that at a junkyard? I'm going to head over one because when I bought my car it was missing a couple of things (a headrest, some covers, and a few other things).

Depends. If you go to a auto salvage yards where they strip the parts themselves, you can usually find one. Looks for a place that specialized in Toyotas.

If you try a pick-n-pull sort of yard it's a bit harder to find a complete engine since people raid them for parts real quick.

I've heard of others importing used engines from Japan, apparently they often take them out after 100k miles and put in a new one so there's a surplus of good, used engines on the cheap.

Ive been building and boosting 4 cylinders for a long time and I can tell you the 2.7l toyota is a lot better candidate than the 3.4L for boost. Here is one making some good power, haltech EMS, these things love it. So you comparing this motor to that crap 3.0L (worst toyota motor ever!) is not right. LOL. Give the 2.7 some love.

Here is another making over 500whp.

Haha, no don't worry I'm not comparing the two performance wise, was just comparing that adding any sort of modifications to the engine was a ton of work and I had decided it was not worth the extra money. Was better spent buying a whole new truck/engine to work with.

And for what it's worth, the 3VZ-E does have it issues but still light years ahead of Jeep, Dodge, etc. from that same era. I did manage to get 288,000 out of the original engine, original transmission and I'm currently driving it every day to work while I work on my 4Runner. But it's a PAIN to work on, it's poorly designed.

I'm sorry I would have to disagree with you. I would much rather have a turbo 3RZ than a supercharged 5VZ. I've had a supercharged 3.4 in one of my Tacomas and it was not very impressive. When I was searching for my current 4Runner I was looking for a 3RZ 5 spd 4x4 but had no luck so I got 3.4 instead.

Exactly my point also. A SC 3.4L puts it where it should ahve been stock.

I'm with this guy. I have a 3rz 4x4 5spd and while I am just doing a catback, cam/valve, piggyback, and headers n/a build the 3rz has so much more aftermarket support its crazy especially when it comes to boost. Check out paradise racing and lc engineering. Both those companies love our big bore 4 with a twin cam sitting on top.

Don't need 500hp but I would love to have about 200.

My 3RZ Runner is turbocharged and I love it. I was the second person to install KO Racing's turbo kit on a 4Runner (the first being Kris, the owner of the company, on his brother's truck), and I worked with them to figure out an entirely bolt-on solution that is also emissions-compliant using a Tacoma cat and slightly different downpipe length.

Here is my YouTube playlist that documents the install of the turbo kit as well as what I have done with it since installation. I am currently running 5psi of boost and keep pace with my friend's supercharged 5VZ 4Runner, so a turbo'd 3RZ is definitely no slouch.

If you have any questions about my setup, let me know and I will be happy to help.
