Has anyone suprcharged or turbo'd a 3rd gen 4Runner?

The 3RZ's main advantage in turbocharging is the fact that there is quite a bit more room in the engine bay for turbo setups. They handle boost quite well.

My 3RZ Runner is turbocharged and I love it. I was the second person to install KO Racing's turbo kit on a 4Runner (the first being Kris, the owner of the company, on his brother's truck), and I worked with them to figure out an entirely bolt-on solution that is also emissions-compliant using a Tacoma cat and slightly different downpipe length.

Here is my YouTube playlist that documents the install of the turbo kit as well as what I have done with it since installation. I am currently running 5psi of boost and keep pace with my friend's supercharged 5VZ 4Runner, so a turbo'd 3RZ is definitely no slouch.

If you have any questions about my setup, let me know and I will be happy to help.
Not meaning to threadjack but how much did you gain from the 5psi? That's stock components plus turbo kit correct?

I haven't dynoed my truck nor do I really plan to, but KO dynoed a 2RZ (2.4L) Tacoma with the same kit, and at 4.5psi, it made 175 RWHP and 185 lb-ft of torque; obviously, with its larger displacement, the 3RZ makes a bit more. That dyno run was with a completely stock truck, restrictive exhaust and all (exhaust pipe is even smaller on the Tacomas). With an intercooler and injectors, you can run around 7psi on a stock motor, and the Tacoma guys with the 2RZ seem to get around 225 RWHP and 260 lb-ft of torque at that boost level; again, a 3RZ would make a bit more power than this.

My engine is 100% stock, but I do have a JBA catback exhaust and a Magnaflow cat (the part that made the kit from KO completely bolt-on). Even the aftermarket exhaust is restrictive though, so a full 3in catback is in my future for sure.

Let me know if you have any more questions!

Might look into something like that if a diesel doesn't work out in a few years. Those are good numbers for completely stock. Adding the appropriate cams would bump those numbers considerably.

I'm sorry I would have to disagree with you. I would much rather have a turbo 3RZ than a supercharged 5VZ. I've had a supercharged 3.4 in one of my Tacomas and it was not very impressive. When I was searching for my current 4Runner I was looking for a 3RZ 5 spd 4x4 but had no luck so I got 3.4 instead.

I wish I had a 5 speed too, but I had no luck finding a supercharged 5VZ-FE with a 5-speed on top of it, they are very rare and I don't think anyone would ever sell one. The automatic transmission on the 5VZ-FE is not that great, I think it's one of the major drawbacks of the design like what you experienced in your supercharged Tacoma.

You're not the only one to have that opinion, that's why on 2nd Gen pickups there was the 22-RTE, a turbo'd 4-cylinder engine. The dyno's on it weren't all that impressive but had just as much if not more pep than the larger 3.0L 3VZ-E with less weight.

The 3rz liter for liter has much better numbers than the 5vz and is also 150 lbs lighter. There are plusses and minuses to each engine though.

I know when I help my buddy out on his 3.4 that space is a premium under the hood and with the 3rz you could run a turbo for each cylinder (stupid but there's enough space lol)

I think the 3.0 was heavier than the 3.4 correct?

I would really love to see an in line 6 developed for the trucks. I hate to say it but ford had a great thing with their 300 six and it went into the F250 which is not a light duty truck.

Yeah the 3.0 has an aluminum head and a iron block (hence the head gasket issues!) and is stupid heavy. The 3.4 is all aluminum.

You should get a Supra then, you'd have fun with the turbo'd version of the inline 6!

Trust me I would....till I wrapped it around a tree lol. I'm better off driving wherever I want at slow speeds lol.

That makes sense, sounds like you've already begun to make it your own. Then more power to you! Like others mentioned, there are superchargers out there made for the 2.7L that would be easier than a turbo (it's a lot of fab work) but there's less performance gains in a S/C than a turbo. IMO a S/C is best if you want to go off-roading though since you get instant power even at low RPM's.

If this rig is also your daily driver I highly recommend putting on a new cat-back system with a high-flow muffler like from Borla and increase the piping size up 1/4 of an inch. You'll get better MPG's and a boost in performance which increase exponentially if you have forced induction. Did that even on my N/A Pickup and gains 20% better MPG's and a small HP boost. It's not talked about much on 4x4 forums but it's pretty much the first thing you do when modding any Sedan/Coupe out there for better performance. Plus the gas savings will pay off your initial install costs.

Do you have any experience with Magnaflow? I just put one on my truck.

3.4 is still a cast block, and if i remember correctly the headgasket issues came from the crossover pipe design cooking one of the cylinders.

Anyways, better get out of this thread, I don't want the thoughts of turbo-ing my 3RZ bothering me again... :loco:

The 3.4 is cast iron block with aluminum heads. The 3.0 had a badly designed HG which caused them to fail.

Oh and its not a 3RZ but ▼▼▼▼

I stand corrected! I must be getting my engines mixed up. The 3.0's also had poorly designed cylinder heads (as well as the 22-RE), they were also known to crack and fail.

And I do have a Magnaflow on one of my trucks and it's improved MPG's and a tad bit of power, but they have quality issues. Mine rattles a bit and "puffs". If I did it again I wouldn't put one on.

i have about 7psi with just a fuel piggyback tune.... i get still get 16-22 mpg (on 35s) and have about 230 hp on tap..

with the 3rz, i have tons of room in engine bay for stuff like york compressor.

i have heard that the 3rz can handle 400hp on stock internals with the right supporting mods

superchargers and turbos are both worthless offroad, :redbrick:

I'll be supercharging this 2.7 in a few weeks. I wish I had the time/money to do the cams. But anyway a lot more options with the 3RZ for adding HP.

Looking forward to seeing this, it's always great to see more boosted 3RZ Runners around! You can always throw the cams in later; from what I can see, not too hard of an install on these engines. Be sure to post pics, and maybe some videos if possible!

Hopefully in the next few weeks. I just found out that an old buddy of mine own's his own shop about 40min from me. We're gonna spend a Sat afternoon catching up & installing this SC. I'll take plenty pics! This is all new to me so hopefully I'll be able to help someone else in the future.
