Has anyone tried out the new LED Headlights??

VLEDS has some of the new LED headlights in stock. The 5th gen guys are buying them up quickly. Exception is they have dedicated Low/High beam lamps.

There are 2 models for our 9003/H4 Lamps.

These older type which are advertised as Dual beam:
H4 9003 5K CXA 1800LM | 1 PAIR - LED - Headlights - Bulb Type

And the newer model which doesn't seem to be Dual beam:
H4 9003 5K CXA 2000LM | 1 PAIR - LED - Headlights - Bulb Type

Sooooo…..

Long story short, I didn't have enough time to take the photos I wanted and unplug the low beams due to some nosy women who I am pretty sure were on the phone with the police when I was taking my pictures in the parking lot at the local high school, they looked like they thought I was up to no good…. some people… ugh…. anyway, I digress.

So here they are, and I must say… I am impressed, I am going to install the other bulb tomorrow and see how both look. You can judge for yourself.

*** All photos taken with tripod mounted Canon EOS 7D w/24-105mm lens @ 24mm - F/5 - ISO 400 - 1.3 sec This closely mimicked what I observed with my eye.

PIC #1 - Philips 35 Watt 4300K HID Low Beams (both left and right)



PIC #2 - Passenger side low beam + VLED's 9005 LED High Beam (Driver's side was covered up.




PIC #3 - Driver's side low beam + Philips 9011 HIR High Beam Bulb (passenger side covered.




PIC #4 - Philips 35 Watt 4300K low beams (both) and HIR High Beam in driver's side and LED in passenger side. All on.




And for shitz and gigz - High Beams + Low Beams + Grill mounted 14,790 lumen Vision X light bar + Rack mounted 26,622 Lumen Light Bar = A metric buttload of light.

VLEDS have great LED bulbs. I've already replaced my Brake/Tail and Reverse bulbs with their Cree LED bulbs.

The 5th gen guys do mention some focus issues with the LEDs. I wonder how they would be with our stock headlight housings.

I emailed VLEDs and asked a few questions about the two types available for H4.

The new 2000LM version is Dual beam with ~400 LM differrence.
The older cheaper model shows 1800 LM high and 1600 LM low beam.

They couldn't give any 3rd gen runner specifics but did say that some vehicles do have beam scatter problems with their stock housings.

So, at 5000K our headlights would need to be adjusted carefully so they don't blind oncoming traffic.

The probable were inferring you may need projector housings. A normal H4 lamp is shielded on the end to reflect the light back into the reflector.

Go to VLEDS and click on Bulb type it will find the part #s for all your bulbs.

I would imagine that you are going to run into the same problems as if you were to just put a HID bulb in the stock housing. The weakness for the 4runner isnt the availability of bright bulbs but the crappy reflectors in the housings.

Combine it with a projector retrofit and you're on to something. All the light with a much simpler bulb setup and no need to find a place for ballasts.

There is a great groupbuy going on right now over at mud - a complete set for our rigs comes out to $125 which is pretty damn cheap (high/low beams). That being said, without projectors the light pattern is everywhere in our housings, not unlike a drop-in HID kit. I haven't seen anyone test them with a projector in our housings yet.

If those bulbs were $75 I'd say go for it but at $125 that is just under half the cost of a full projector drop-in retrofit.

YOu can do a drop-in setup for < $300 from TRS.

i have tried these led hedlinghts out for a friends company. an i honestly have to say the le technology is still behing in advances vs. hids. the leds just dont put the light out as well as a proper hid setup. thoe only good LED setup i have seen in person woulf be the one used on the new acura cars. but look at how many LED moduels they use. plus since there is no yellowish light output from these leds bad wheather conditions such as rain and snow would wash the light beam and pattern out in those conditions.

Interesting, I was wondering when Vleds would make headlight LEDs. I will be watching to see if anyone puts these into a stock housing and how it looks.

I can recommend the 2000LM at VLEDs. I just did a writeup about them here. They work well in the 3rd Gen clear glass housings with good beam pattern and glare comparable to factory HIDs on other cars.
