I just bought a 1990 3 liter 4runner with 189000 miles prev owner said it heated up and quit running I havent even tinkered with it yet. any suggestions where I should start it had head work at 185000 miles. that probably got fried. the body and interior is in excellent shape so I dont want to scrap it

The first thing I would do is run a compression test to determine if it had blown a head gasket. More than likely if the head gasket is blow, it is on either the front passenger or rear driver cylinders. It is possible that one or both cams have jumped time. Your compression test might show this as well.

Anywhoo.... Take compression readings of the cylinders and post them here. We will then be able to point you in the direction you need to go.

just got the chance to mess with it there was more water in the pan than oil......dang..must be a head gasket ...and now i got word that the heads are already shaved thinner than speck...
