Have a 5th gen, considering a 3rd gen

A work associate has a one owner 97 sr5 limited? V6, 4wd that seems like a decent deal. Its a one owner with 230k miles....all maintenance, timing belt etc up to date. Cloth interior, not exterior damage. I would say excellent overall condition for the age. Bone stock.

What do think is a fair price?
Southern car, no rust.

Where "southern".... east coast (I'm just outside Atlanta) and I've been watching a similar sit, and sit, and sit at $7500. California and you might be well over $10000 without issue.

Doesn't really matter what Other people think, just you and the seller. They might think $5k is fair.

The 3rd gen is a great looking suv with functinallity. Compared to the 5th gen or lc100 it might feel a little out dated. Yet the 3rd Gen is just as capable off road as the other two. On road it's not bad but not as powerful as the 5th. The interior comforts are not as good as the newer vehicles but perfectly adequate to deliver a comfortable ride.

That's about right these days. The auto shortage has affected most vehicles and these are Desireable again.

I've had 3 strangers knock on door asking, "How much for the 4Runner?" over the past 9 months. Next one is going to get told a price, $30,000.

I can't comment on the price. I paid a bit less than that but have multiple thousands in new Toyota parts (I don't want to actually add the receipts) to bring it to a known baseline so I feel good driving it as a DD. I made the decision to buy once, cry once.

If yours is up to date that means you won't have to do anything right away.

If he has all maintenance records, and is current /not due for major service (timing belts, LBJs, radiator, valve cover gaskets, etc) then $9K is at market.

If the vehicle will need all those things, and possibly more, then I would reasonably deduct those from the price and make him an offer. Like $6K if it needs all the major service items, and see what he says.

Interior does look nice. Does it have a factory e-locker?

Admittedly it’s a nice 3rd gen. But IMO trading a lc100 for a 3rd gen 4Runner… eh, idk that I’d do that unless there was something particular to the 3rd gen you really like. I’d imagine you could turn the lc100 into a pretty comfy and capable off road rig if that’s what you’re after.

I have a 5th gen and a 3rd gen. The 3rd gen has a lot more wind noise, the seats are more uncomfortable, and a lot less engine power then my 5th gen. But my 3rd gen is my favorite forever.


I think the price is okay. It’s what they are going for these days for sure. I see these prices and much more all the time on Craigslist and eBay motors. They are expensive right now.

that was a dealer-installed option on the SR5. it's a stick-on wood laminate with plastic coating for safety reasons. however, that one seems to be faded already and the plastic coating is gone.

Having bought mine 3 years ago, in Nashville, for $6500 after hunting for ~8 months... you could *NOT* buy one, in that condition, for $4500 back then. The $6500 I spent was the cheapest (and only) single owner, under 200k mile 4x4 I found. Plenty of 300k+, ragged out interior and peeling exterior 4x4's at $4,500 though. I know, I looked at dozens of them in person and hundreds more online during my search.

OP, better the devil you know.... you'll be better served by putting money into the Land Cruiser.

Thats exactly what it appears to be, we actually talked about it. He says it was on when new and over time, the thick coating (assume it was clear plastic) has delaminated. What is left is wood. I think i could lightly sand and coat with clear poly.....or remove them completely.

I was thinking the same...but i need to rebuild the front end on this LC100. it has 220k, i have done the timing belt, water pump, steering pump, alternator and new radiator. Some front end popping leads me to believe i need to just redo the whole front. Plus it needs suspension upgrade, torsion bars are maxed out and still sits low. I am being lazy and thought the 3rd gen 4r would be fun to have and they look sooo good. And I could sell the LC100.

I think i may offer 7k and see if he goes for it. I think it would be cool to have a 3rd gen parked next to my 5th gen...plus they are both white.
He probably wont take the offer. But who knows.

Run the VIN through Toyota's owner sub-site to see what the original badging was and repair history, if available. If you find nothing, you've only wasted a few minutes of your time.

If its in Cali, 9k is a fair price considering its a clean 1 owner car. Assuming its gotten all the work done over its life, you should have a relatively trouble free time with it.

The only determining factor (for me) between the LC100 and the 4runner is size. The LC is a lot larger, and the 4runner is already a great size with plenty of interior space. If you tow or need a 3rd row, then the LC is better.

The 4runner and the LC100 are also 2 different era's despite being close in age. The 4runner feels a lot older, since the LC100 was considered to be luxury it holds up way better by modern standards.

Ok front ends… if the 3rd gen hasn’t had its front end gone through yet, you had better plan and budget for the same work on it you are trying to avoid with your Lc.
