thats what being a jackass gets you, i purchased a set of the those rubber mats from toyota and in the package with the directions in big letters it says do not double up the mats due to sticking gas pedal. if that guy was to stupid to read the directions shame on him. i know i mihgt sound alittle heartless but its cause of jerkoffs like him is the reason why people in this country make a big deal out of nothing especially when most things that happen like this could have just been avoided only if they took the time to read the DIRECTIONS.

I agree, a presumable well-trained, experienced law enforcement officer could do nithing to stop the car? Turn the engine off, shift to neutral, pull the e-brake, but there is a good 15 seconds on the 9-1-1 tape and who knows long before the call the car had this problem.

Exactly. Neutral, pull over to the emergency lane, shut off the engine and brake to stop. The vacuum booster has enough power reserved for two or three assisted braking/stops.
Alternatively, floor liners could get around the "stuck accelarator" provided they are installed properly the first time and under the pedal. Husky's have sharp tacks underneath that will prevent them from sliding around.

How many here know what fly-by-wire is? Well that technology that first appeared on fighter jets (i.e., F-16) is now in our cars...in our cars and trucks and suvs today...do we really have control over them...or is our inputs being relayed to via some glitch prone computer? (Didn't a f-22 raptor crash recently due to a computer glitch?)
Vehicles today, a driver has very little DIRECT control of anything, I believe...there is no throttle cable anymore, no direct electrical link from ignition key (if even present) to starter or ignition, etc.
When I was a engineering student...one of my professors told about how 747s would just start falling out of the air after so many flight hours on autopilot...and I don't think they ever figured out why...some sort of computer glitch. Scary.
More and more, a computer, not us, is controlling our vehicles...and we let it happen...because we can't get our fat lazy @ss to learn to do a simple things like parallel park or set the clock on the VCR..we make things more complex to, I suppose, make our lives easier, but we might be shooting ourselves in the foot.

Assuming the throttle is fly-by-wire, which I think it is, it's not going to be able to tell the difference between a foot and a floormat pressing the gas pedal.
And even if the computer had malfunctioned and opened the throttle w/out anything on the pedal, the driver should have still been able to place it in neutral, turn the key off, or hit the brakes.
