having problems with my 22re

hey so this is my first time posting on here, but i have been reading posts on this site and others for months now.

so.. i have a 1995 4runner with a 22re in it, it has 333K KM's on it. i bought it off of a local mechanic. A months ago i brought it in to the mechanic i bought it off of to get my 33's put on. he noticed that its sounding a little funny when idling. he checked the oil and noticed that there was almost none, but i had just gone for an oil change 2500km's ago. so we put 2L of royal purple in as well as some carbon cleaner and he told me to keep an eye on the oil level and check back in a month

i check the oil every 3 days, its been 850km's now and ive already gone through the 2L of oil. its not burning oil, its not leaking while its parked, so where could it be going.

also, before i put the 33's on i had 31's and i could get about 425Km's to a tank. i knew that the 33's would effect my gas mileage, but it shot down really bad. so i have taken off the 33's and gone back to my 31's and im now getting about 300km's to a tank. i have put in a brand new oem air filter as well 2 days ago, yet no improvement.

i dont know what to do. i dont know why its getting such bad gas mileage, i drive like a granny, and i dont know where all the oil is going. if anyone has any information at all please help!!!

Check the block thoroughly - valve cover, front main, rear main, everywhere there's a hole. If you don't find any leaks or seepage, then dollars to donuts you've got bad rings and you're burning that oil. What's your exhaust pipe look like? Black and sooty?
 
il check both main's. and yes the exhaust is black and sooty.

i was told that my cat could possibly be clogged as well? could this be a possible problem?
 
A sooty tailpipe seals the deal - your rings are bad. No sense putting expensive oil in until you've done a rebuild.

A clogged cat could affect your mileage, easily.
 
well il check the valve guides and seals as well. i really do want to save this truck, but i dont have the money to rebuild the motor. apperently my friend can get his hands on a inline 5 diesel out of an Fj of some sort im assuming. that may be my best option.

If you don't have the money for a rebuild, you REALLY don't have the money for an engine swap. I drove an old Ford with bad rings for three years, I just had to check the oil weekly. :D It can be done while you save up for the rebuild or a crate engine.
 
One sign of a engine burnning oil is White not black, I just serviced my head gskt on my 86 4 runner when I removed the exhaust manifold and inspected the exhaust ports all of my exhaust valves were White (burnning oil), valve stem seals, I was using about 1/4 of a quart of oil every fill up I had a feeling it was my valve seals all along you could not see the smoke plume in the day light but you could see a lite plume at night when leaving a stop light it's not much smoke and like I said its hard to detect in day light , if it was rings you would have blow buy the oil would be in the intake and you would see smoke under heavy acceleration and your plugs would foul out, A clogged cat at night will glow cherry red, try and rent a leak-down tester this tool will tell you what shape your engine is in rings, valves , seals , a vacum gauge will tell you if your cat is clogged also.
 
How long do you think the engine will last with the rings like this? If i just keep topping up the oil. If I take out my cat and run a straight pipe, will that help my mpg's go back?

I've run oil burning Toyotas for years! Run a heavy weight oil like a 20w-50. It burns slower. Like the others said, use this time to save up for a rebuild or swap.

As long as you keep oil in it, your engine should stay running. I don't know what deleting the cat would do, I've heard some folks report their mileage going down after taking their cat out. I wouldn't do it unless you know for sure the cat is clogged.

Hahaha where I live I don't have to worry about that. If anything I'd have to worry about my neighbors complaining about my loud truck after it's straight piped
 
Straight piping it...really? With a test pipe and something along the lines of a Super Turbo (set up I'm running), it really isn't that loud.
