Vacationing here on the big island....
I have notice a couple things...Tacos and 4rs are very very popular.
Also I found it unusual that almost every single one has a mild lift and bigger tires. Most jeeps here are modded too. Have not asked a local but I am not aware of q big off road scene nor can you drive on the beach. The only offloading I have done is to get to the green sand beach.

Anyways...rambling thoughts...if there are any Hawaiians on here, feel free to chime in.

Many years ago I drove a 4WD Chevy SUV down the Waipi‘o Valley Rd and to the black sand beach. It was exciting especially doing some water crossings. I’m sure I violated my rental contract but I stayed out of trouble.

Another short 4WD trip on lava rock was down South Point Rd to the green sand beach.

Yes the Waipoi valley is sweet ride down and up...1st gear low range in my dad's lx470 thevwhole ride down and climb out. Only 4wd vehicles with low range are permitted down the one lane shelf road (with spots for passing). Otherwise u have hike it...at least an hour up.

Beach is awesome...if you go left at the valley floor about a 1/4 mile it opens up to Kakeha falls....its drops about 1700 feet.
These are from yesterday. You have to zoom in the falls, but they are pretty majestic. The falls river actually meets the ocean in the middle of the black sand beach.

Green sands is nice as well...not gonna make it this year, but its a fun ride across the 4wd trail too.

Thought it might be just me. Went to Kaui 3 years ago and noticed the same thing. I started paying more attention, it's amazing how few types of cars.

Uniform 1: Tourist rental car of 4 door stock jeep or mustang/camaro convertible

Uniform 2: Local, do you prefer Tacoma or 4Runner for your uniform? OP is right, many have mods.

Would love to hear from a native on why, anyone???

Wife has family on Oahu. I was asking but couldn't quite get a straight answer. Part of it is its just what they like. Part of it is the Japanese vehicles and local culture. Father in law remembers the offroad scene growing up there and he said it used to be different.

I enjoyed seeing the Yotas none the less.

I noticed the majority had big lift kits and almost completely bald tires. thymus have blown their loads on their lift kits and had no more money for tires.

Tacomas and 4Runners are pretty much luxury here, the older the better

I couldn’t help but notice all the 4 Runners when I was on Oahu last month too so I looked it up and found here…

I did that in a rented Jeep several years ago with a local guy and his family. We ended up doing water crossings, following a creek and getting a long way back in forest. It was pretty cool.
