Head gasket issue Years?

I believe very early 96's had some head gasket issues. I think they were taken care of in a recall. The problem was corrected by the 97' model year. Only the 5VZ V6 had the problem I believe.
 
Mine is an early model that had 2 head gasket replacements done by the dealer. Do a VIN search from the dealer to see maintenance history of vehicle.

I edited my post in your other thread, this one jarred my memory i dug out paperwork on 96 I purchased it from ford dealer, I took it to Toyota dealer because of HG issue they ran VIN, 96 has 01/96 manufacture date it did not need HG's.
Didn't want to add any confusion.
 
I don't think there's a year range of the 3rd Gens that had worse head gasket issues than others.

If I were you, I'd shoot for the '99 or '00

3.slo had their issues I think.
Your dead on with 99 or 2k, the 01 02 ABS chit is potential problem.
The Trac AWD Sys I could do without, Andy mod makes it better.
I got tired of looking.
 
Anything particular pros about the 99 and 2000s? Just not the issues that were discussed?

Im looking at a 97. Pretty clean. 161K. Engine bay is very clean. No rust. Limited edition.

There are some mid-generation "upgrades", look it up.
Cupholders were moved around, bigger cargo space in the rear panel, etc.

My 97's HG went at 216k miles but it was over heated pretty bad at 200k miles when it got a pink milk shake. Who knows if it would have lasted longer if it never over heated.

It has a 99 engine in it right now with 210k miles and is running like a champ.

There are no years that are more prone to HG failure then others.

It's always a shot in the dark with a used vehicle, so having some maintenance records is key, which you already know. If you've already found a clean truck with relatively low mileage, I'd get it, especially if you can learn about the history of the truck.

I'd argue that the automatic transmissions in '99 and '00 trucks seem to have more issues than other years.
 
I’ve seen blown head gaskets on years 96, 97, 98, 99, 00, 01, and 02. My advice is to avoid all those years and you’ll never worry.

Little things that make a difference: Cup holders in center console, larger cubby in back, Ltd Lumbar switch in seat base instead of seat side this switch always breaks.
With third gens there is not much difference between the years pro v con that makes one better than the other. If rear locker is wanted 96-2k.
Find one that you like pay what your comfortable with and enjoy it.
Once you get it two priorities: Radiator and LBJ's
