Head Gasket question.

I am looking at this used 97 SR5 with 220k miles on her (a lot I know) and new tires. The owner said there's "water mixing in with oil" does that mean its got a blown head gasket? Is that even fixable and how much would the repair be?

He is asking $4000, I offered him $2000 yay or nay?

If the rest was really nice.. or in good shape. I would do 2,000$ if he will take it.. but thats just me

does it have a locker? what kinda shape the rest of it in? what color is the smoke from the tailpipe?? how does it smell??

no locker, no idea about the smoke, what color is bad? what should it smell like?
Doesn't the engine need to be rebuilt if the head gasket is blown and "water mixed with oil"?

u need answers to all of those questions...

if the head gasket is blown, you need to do a few things...

but first you need to know what is leaking into it, you find that out by looking at the smoke from the tailpipe... If the head gasket is blown, the smoke will smell sweet and be white, that is your when you engine is burning antifreeze..

the other question is did the car overheat? or did he stop it and have it towed immediately...

other questions you might want to ask, why isnt he going to rebuild the cylinder head.

no need to rebuild the full engine unless it seized.. if that happened then I wouldnt touch it.

Maybe if your a newbie to engines you might not want to risk it.

I agree with Duhockey, a HG isn't that big of a deal in itself, but when a HG blows, the truck WILL overheat fairly quick if not stopped and towed. And I doubt if the owner is going to tell you the extent of how bad it may or may not have overheated unless he is really honest and somewhat mechanically minded. If anything, I would offer him what you think it's worth less the price of a new engine/full rebuild to be safe (I would say around $3000 average cost of a used engine installed).

So this guy admits he has a major engine problem and still wants $4k? I'd find a different 4R if I were you.
