Head gasket swapping?

The head gasket on my 1986 4Runner just ate it, and I have a few questions about putting a new one in. A friend of mine goes to UTI which is a local automotive school. He is getting all of the torq specs and stuff to do the swap, and then he is going to help me put it in. My first question is this: Would it just be easier to pull the whole motor out? I am 99 percent sure that it needs a Timing cover gasket as well, would it just be easier to pull the whole thing to do both of these swaps? I realize that this is a relativly large undertaking, but it has to happen as there is no chance I will be bringing it to a shop to pay out the nose. Has anyone done this before and can anyone throw out some tips so that I dont just scrw the whole thing up? Anything that anyone can tell me is most appreciated, as I have never attempted anythign of this magnitude. Thanks, Sam.
