Ok so my buddies has a 89 runner (22re/w56) that has been getting intermittent overheating problems. The engine was rebuild about 11,000mi ago.
So far we have done the simple stuff such as new coolant, thermostat, and had the radiator taken to a shop to make sure nothing was wrong with it. After all that the thing is still having intermittent overheating issues which leads me to think that the head gasket is going on it.
Last week he brought it to a local shop and they said that the last owner didn't change the coolant very often and it got to be acidic and the engine is done for and he should just get a new motor and put it in himself. I don't see anything weird in the coolant and don't get how the motor is "done for" when it runs just fine. It seems weird to me that they didn't want to do the job and that they told him to do it himself.
I just thought I would get another opinion on the situation.
