Head gasket?

Maintenance history: NONE. It's a family members car and I've really gotten onto her for years about this. Oil always changed every 3k. Nothing else. no other fluids have ever been changed to my knowledge, timing belt etc. Everything is original. One owner. All fluids look good. It has never overheated. Nothing is being done to catch it up on service right now due to her financial problems.

Symptoms:
White smoke at start up. It's not WHITE, but it's definitely whiter than what I'm used to seeing. Smells sweet.

Slight delay in starting (usually its start-start-run...now it's more like start-start-start-start-run

Still runs well. At idle I can feel a consistent rough spot

Recently replaced the valve covers. Oil was in the throttle body, plenum, and caked to the sides of what I could see in the intake manifold. PCV is good and rattling. Truck was down for 2 days due to parts availability. After starting it I could really hear the valves (quiet diesel sound). I've been able to hear them for a bit, but they were louder this time. atmosphere air was getting into the driver side valve cover, the truck was idling higher than normal before I fixed that. Now the idle is lower like it should be. Inspected the timing belt and it still is intact surprisingly and looks ok.

I'm thinking a vacuum and compression test.

For compression- what am I looking for? I don't know the specs for this motor.

For vacuum- Where's a good spot to T it in?

Input???

I am at work so I can't provide the link via my phone but if you use the link in my sig to properly search you will find a lot of info.

I too have had a head gasket issue. That thread is linked within my build thread.

any oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil?

for the compression test, you're looking for 174 psi or more with a minimum of 145 psi.
