I used Colgate white paste toothpaste on mine. Get a good buffing pad on an orbital car buffing tool. Keep it wet. Works like a champ!

I can actually see that working if he is serious. Toothpaste has small particles in it that clean and polish your teeth. seems legit to me that it would take off a small amount of yellowing.

I've actually used toothpaste to clean my headlights myself (and I know friends who have done the same). It works very well actually, just scrub it a lot and make sure you wash it off after with a wet cloth. One time I didn't wash it off entirely and the next morning it had a film of dried toothpaste on top and I didn't notice till I parked my car at the store.

headlight advice
I used to buff mine out and they'd look great for a few months. I tried some stuff sold at all Ace Hardwares that a Chattanooga inventor came up with, and the difference is a spray in the kit that is actually a clear coat/hardener/finish/ something or the other. Works for YEARS instead of months, and I would spend that money again in a heartbeat. Has enough stuff to average three sets of headlights, and it took my wife's faded dulled yellowed Maxima lights and made them look new. All for about $25 total. Called the Headlight Renew Doctor, and here's a quote from the inventor :
Next is what Watts calls the special sauce. "Our sealant has an anti-yellow agent and UV ray inhibitor or blocker," Watts says. "It will block the sun's rays and keep it from causing that reaction again. This is like our sunscreen for the headlight." Long term fix not a short term cover-up.
No animals were harmed in the typing of this announcement.

the faded head lights are caused by sun drying out the plastic as well as debris from the road (sand and rocks) pitting the plastic.
at the shop we use sanding disc of multiple grits, ranging from 600-3000. this sands down the head light so that it becomes a smooth piece of plastic again that polishes up crystal clear.
the best way is to polish it so that it will be a new head light.
also like others have said tooth paste works because it has tiny grit to polish the light.
the wipe on stuff is just like clear epoxy, filler to fill in the pits in the plastic.
take your pick on the repair. everything works.

I used the polishing compound a few times also, lasted about 4 months each time.
