Headlight upgrade (HIR)?

#s may vary depending on brand used: High beam stock: 9005, 12.8V, 65W, 1700 lumens, 320 hours High beam ... HIR1(9011), 12.8V, 65W, 2530 lumens, 320 hours,... Low beam stock: 9006, 12.8V, 55W, 1006 lumens, 360 hours High beam ... HIR2(9012), 12.8V, 55W, 1875 lumens, 800 hours
the new phillips 9012 is

What are the advantages of an HIR vs. an HID set-up?

Personally, I really like the Xenon look. I was thinking about doing the 6000k mod and am investigating the very best brand to get
 
Surprised to see this thing still going. I've not yet made a purchase because I just can't decide. Some say it's worth it, others say it isn't. Numbers don't lie though, so I'm gonna end up doing this eventually.

HIR's are much easier to install, no extra wiring. HIR's are designed for the reflector type housings (such as the 03-05's) and work better. HID's do not work well in reflector housings, the light is too scattered. For HID's to work well, you really need projectors. Also, most HID kits are "plug and play", but they do require additional wiring and ballasts (typically come with the kit).

True, numbers don't lie....but keep in mind that it takes approximately 4x the rated lumens to double the amount of perceived light. In other words, your eyes probably won't see the difference in light output when comparing, say, 1900 lumens and 1700 lumens.
 
ARK, i went from an 1750 lumen + bulb output to a bulb with 2100 & i can tell ya that much of a difference (350), made a big improvement to me.
 
I'm a bit of newbie around here. I'm looking to upgrade my 2005 4Runner with new high and low beam bulbs. From what I've read it seems like HIR's are the way to go. Can you please clarify something for me?

Toshiba 9011 HIR1 ==> high beam???

Phillips 9012 HIR2 ===> low beam???

Plus what would be a good fog lamp bulb? Thanks

Here's a thread where I made the conversion but to answer your question:
9006 low beam socket is used with the HIR 9012 low beam bulb.
9005 high beam socket is used with the HIR 9011 high beam bulb.

I haven't messed with my fogs yet so no advice there.
 
I disagree as well. I upgraded the high beams to HIR and theblows to H9's. Huge difference on both high and low. I also replaced the fogs with Hella Optilux XY yellow and added a set of PIAA 540 fogs with the same Hella yellow bulbs. Big difference!

I also upgraded a while back (11-30-2009) to the H9 and the HIR high beams. I also have to say "YES this setup is a quite brighter, I've even had several friends in my truck who also usually say "damned that's alotta light from your truck". All I know is here in Tucson we have laws about how much light pollution is allowed due to the 5 or so observatories here, so when it's dark out it's black out. This extra light helps!

I have the HIRs in my low beams and fogs and love them. But I'm always looking to improve, do the H9s replace the 9006s with some modification or are the H9s only for the projector headlights?
 
H9s are used to replace the H11 in 06+. if u need more than what u presently have, HID is an option.

HIRs are working out well.
 
HIR's

I'm aware that halogen bulbs lose up to 25% of their brightness over time. I'm comparing my HIR's to what I replaced. I had Wagner TruViews which were much brighter and whiter than the stock bulbs. The HIR's were again a big improvement and have a life rated at 1,400 hours. Let's see Silverstars make any such sort of claim.

I like spending money on my Runner and these are the best replacement bulbs out there.
 
I had Siverstars for a time and they were nice except the big drawback for me was they were absolutely terrible in rain or snow. Couldn't see sh*t. I now have the HIR Toshibas and love them, but will be changing to the HIR Philips very soon here. They are supposed to be a tad brighter than the Toshibas.
