Headliner needs replacing

Ok first off, I tried searching but was unable to find my question answered so please dont lynch me . I just bought a 2000 4runner (beige interior) with a sunroof. I noticed the headliner is extremely scuffed and scratched in the back half of the truck. I would like to try and find a better one from a junkyard and replace mine but I have no idea how hard it is to replace it, or if it is attached to anything else that will make it more difficult (sunroof?) Does anyone know if its just as easy as undoing the clips and pulling it out or will I need to mess with the sunroof? I'd appreciate any advice if anyone has done this as I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to interiors and I am brand new to the 3rd gen!

It takes 30 minutes to 1 hour to remove if you know what you are doing.

First time will probably take a bit longer than an hour.

It is worth almost nothing and no one - for the most part - ever purchases them from junk yards. They are normally scrapped with the truck.

If you find one at yard I'm sure if you offer them $40 to let you pull it yourself they will take the deal.

There are 4 round plastic clips holding it to the rear ceiling. These will most likely break when you pry them out.

There is a ring of trim around the sunroof that just gets pulled inward to remove.
Courtesy lights, grab handles, sun visors, etc all have to unscrew.

Then all interior panels that touch the headliner need to be removed from the rear working forward, as they are all layered.

At this point the headliner can be pulled down a bit and slid out the back.

Do a search for sound deadening. There are lots of helpful pics and tutorials for panel removal.

Be careful with the screws for the "oh sh!t" handles.

They have a touch of blue loc-tite on them, and are brass. They strip real easily.

I had to drill out all 4 of the front ones and use a extractor to get them out.

crazy idea - Has anyone removed the headliner and left it off? I'm not sure if it would look ghetto or cool. I assume the would be a lot more interior noise. My headliner has water stains from the sunroof drain being clogged, and I was considering the idea.

It's an easy job and should take you about an hour to get it out and the new one back in.

Buy a clip remover and DO NOT remove the grab handles, it's easier to leave them, the headliner will still come out. Once everything is lose and the trim is unsnapped pull it straight out from the rear cargo area. It will help if you have an extra set of hands when putting the new one back in, same way only reverse the process.

Ended up buggering it in a couple places, and it was pretty rough anyways, so I'm just gonna re-cover it. Kits cost like $60, and it will freshen up my ride a some so what the heck!

Do you know if its possible to get the exact same material as the original? If I was going to recover mine I'd prefer it to appear original. But I suppose if it was slightly different it wouldnt matter that much.

I have been looking around, and some of the materials look really close to stock. Most of the places you can get a sample card from for a few dollars, then just compare what they offer and pick the closest one

Im thinkin that I might get a fabric just slightly darker than the factory beige, so it hides dirt a little better. But that's just me.
