Heat Shield above muffler

On my way home from work the other day, I started getting a loud rattling noise coming from the undercarriage. When I got home to inspect it, I noticed the heat shield above the muffler was completely loose so I removed it. Just want to know if I can live without it or is it critical for it to be there.

same exact scenario for me. Just completely removed it and have had no issues. It has been about 5 months.
