For all of those that live in cold weather areas, watch out for your heater blower motor freezing up. This morning I started my car as usual and turned on the heat to defrost the interior as I wiped the snow off. When I got back in the car it was still cold. Usually by the time I take all of the snow off, the car is rather warm bordering hot. Well, come to find out, the heat wasn't blowing any air. So, I called the dealer and explained the problem. Apparently there is a service bulletin about this and it's a known problem. Something about the way the blower motor is encased doesn't protect it from ice. They have to take it out and replace it with a modified design of the blower motor and housing. So, if this happens to you... now you know.

thanks for the heads up noloc....i haven't had that problem yet, but since it's a tsb do you think i can take it to the dealer and have them check if my vin is in the range for that tsb? will they do it for me? i don't want it going out after my warranty is expired. i'm actually thinking of getting an extended warranty...you think it's worth it? thanks again!
 
Trance... the service rep didn't provide me with the TSB # so I'm not sure if there actually exists one. If I find out more information, I'll drop you a line. As far as the extended service warranty, I'm actually considering purchasing one when my goes. I really don't want to deal with anything part going and having to dish out big $$$ for repairs. I plan on keeping this 4Runner for a while so I think it's a good investment.
 
Yup, thats why I just bought the extended warranty when I purchased the truck. I got the 7year/100k warranty. Hopefully I'll have the truck longer than that though.
 
Just got a call from the service rep... the parts for the blower motor are on back order. I'm stuck with this tiny little loaner car until then!!! @!$%@#!%@!#!@
 
Before you panic be sure the blower motor is bad. The heating system disables
the blower until the motor is warm so it won't blow cold air(nice feature).

The service rep confirmed that the Blower Motor has failed and will need to be replaced. They are ordering the parts and I still have to wait !!#$!%#!

As for the blower motor disabling itself until the car warms up. That isn't the way it works in my truck. As soon as I get in the car and turn the heat on ( Hi sometimes ) it comes on right away. It's not disabled and we are talking about weather in the single digits.

Same thing with my 4Runner. But I hardly ever use the automatic climate control. I usually use manual control.

Maybe when the climate control is in automatic, the fan will not come on until the engine starts to get up to temperature??
 
Heads up... the parts are at least on backorder for another week or so. So anyone experiencing the problem, it's going to be a while for the fix.
 
There is a discussion on this issue in the 'General discussion' forum. It sounds like the parts for this fix are on backorder and may not be available for a month or longer. The TSB info is;

hi i'm new and i just purchased an sr5 and it's got only 5k miles and yes my blower motor went...it's cold in the mornings...brrrr

the part is still on backorder...
 
Well.. if you wait long enough and the temperature warms up I've found that the blower motor actually unfreezes and continues normal operation. Yesterday I got in my truck after work (it was pretty sunny here so I face the front of the truck towards the most sunlight), and low and behold... the blower starting working. I was completely amazed. This morning however, it stopped working. But this afternoon when I went for lunch.. it started back up again. Makes me wish I still had that garage.
 
After freezing my *ss off in 0 degree weather for three mornings I insisted that the wife park outside and I park in the garage.

On days that it went above freezing and I parked with the hood in the sun, it would unfreeze. But the next morning it was froze up again.

I have to clear all that sh*t out of the other garage bay so that we both can park in there. Looks like I wll have to construct an outdoor shed to put all that junk into.
 
Great News!

For those of you waiting around for the backorder Blower Motor fix, I just got a call and they're in! It's been 2 weeks of driving a rental and just staring at my broken down beast in the driveway.... Noloc, call Hoselton if you hadn't got the call yet. Next issue....will the Dealership scratch, dent or oil anything up in the process. Keep your fingers crossed!
