Heater Control Cable

00 4Runner, 4 cyl, auto.

Heater control rotary knob (the one that directs where the air comes out) is hard to turn. Have yet to take it apart but it feels like it connects to one or more cables.

Do I replace the cables or is it possible to lubricate them? Or is there something else that commonly goes wrong?

It is a metal wire and not a cable. It never gets jammed. Remove the knobs and gently lift the AC switch off the unit. There should be 2 philips screws and you should be able to pull the control unit few inches. Now you can find the cable. There is a metal clip that holds the outer cable housing. Put a mark on the housing cable and remove the clip but don't let it fall into the dash. You can now remove the cable. NOTE: put back the clip right on the mark other wise the doors won't close and direct the air properly
The other end should be visible from the driver side gas pedal

I know this is an OLD thread but I had a hell of a time finding the part number for the water valve control cable. The part is 55907-35080 if anyone needs it.
