Heater in Recirculate mode always on startup

I've noticed that the auto climate control does that for A/C, but haven't seen it for heat too. I'll have to watch it.
The reason it does that for A/C is because it's more efficient to cool air inside the car that's already been cooled. Until the A/C system gets fully up to speed, it would have an ever harder time doing anything useful with outside fresh hot air.
Don't worry - if you had it on outside air before you shut the car off, then the computer will go back to outside air as soon as the system is up to speed. You don't need to change it.

It seems to me that AUTO turns the A/C on and off automatically.
In AUTO mode, if the A/C button is on, then the computer will turn the compressor on and off as needed. You can turn off the A/C button, and the computer will accept that. Of course, it won't cool very well or dehumidify the air.Fourty-four said:

BTW, I don't usually use the AUTO mode. I prefer manual control. That's why I'm not too sure how the AUTO mode really works.

recirculate mode a new option for '06?
Is this option new on the 06 runner? Does it allow to recirculate cool air in the seat of both the driver and passenger?

I went out to lunch with a friend who has an ES330 Lexus sedan. I was impressed when I felt the seat cool down. A nice feature that I have not seen in the GX or 4 Runner but would like to own an SUV that had one.

This leads to the absurdity of getting into a truck that's baked in the sun on a cool day, needing to have fresh outside air in the cabin to cool it off and finding the truck has switched itself to recirc!
As great as the rest of the 4Runner is, it puzzles me that Toyota
(a.) Designed such a klunker of an HVAC system, and
(b.) Has neglected to fix this obvious design goof over succeeding model years.
I'd guess a simple software change would do the job.
