Heavy Steering 2003 2wd LTD

Hi All,

First post here, but have already fixed my air con and screaming serpentine belt issues using this great site!

Ive got a 2003 V6 Limited 2wd with 58,000 miles, with increasingly heavy steering. Ive searched the site extensively, and have found a few ideas.

Symptoms. The power steering is quite heavy. Reeving the engine whilst turning the wheel has no effect on the heaviness. Its smooth, not 'notchy'. And theres no audible whine from anywhere under the hood. First noticed recently after returning from a 2000 mile road trip (all on-road.), before that it still turned like new.

First thought is the steering pump, or a something needing greasing.
But from these forums, Ive seen that it could be anything from the intermediate shaft, to a rusty steering rod joint, to seized ball joints, and worst case the steering rack. But most of these have been in cars with higher miles.

Any tips on the best place to start, or the best way to diagnose the problem?
I'm wondering if the screaming (therefore slipping) serpentine belt has somehow damaged the pump?

Thanks in advance!
Brett
