Hella 500 wiring

Hi guys,

I have a quick and hopefully easy question. I did some research so I have some background.

I currently have hella 500 spots wired to a always hot switch inside. Over the 3-4 months in using them I've found myself really wishing they were wired to work with my highbeams.

So question is is there any quick and easy way to rewire using my set up now? Get trigger ground or positive to the switch when the highbeams are activated? I have a 2001 with DRL so I there should be separate fuses for low and high under the hood ( haven't looked going on research)

Any suggestions greatly appreciated and as always hope everyone is doing well.

Yes, using a bosch style relay you can wire the relay's trigger wire into the highbeam wire and draw power for the lights direct off the battery. You can actually still keep your switch too, just put the switch in the middle of the trigger wire between the headlamp and the relay.

If you are already using a relay (which you should be) just move the wire that powers the existing switch to intercept the highbeam wire as described above. Done and done.

I'm not so sure it's that simple. The OP has DRLs which mean the highs are on at a reduced power all the time.

You could be right. I'm interested to find out as this is something I have been wanting to do also.

DRLs go to the lows, not the highs. So you can trigger off the highs as [MENTION=95183]octanejunkie[/MENTION] suggests..

If you need to trigger off the lows, like for fog lights, you can trigger off the ground signal from the low beam stalk switch to the DRL relay (green wire).

However, being able to turn fogs on while DRLs are on doesn't seem like that bad an idea. If you trigger off the low beam power for fogs, it will be off with high beams and when key is off and that's what you really want. Power side is not reduced, that happens on the ground side.

Personally, I'd prefer them completely separate, or at least switched (maybe even on a 3-way rocker) so you have the option to trigger with another light, override or disable entirely. I'm weird that way.

I will clarify just to make sure I have to right. I really want the hella 500 spots to come on when I activate my highbeams, used during my early morning communicate to avoid deere etc. So main goal is to have high beams and Hellas on same time using stock headlight stalk to activate both.

I'll take my existing switch power and instead of running to battery I will tap into highbeam hot lead wire. I will keep switch in the on position, but the switch will only be hot when it gets power from highbeams being activate. Sounds like it should work.

Now to just find exactly which wire to tap

If you switch your light relay trigger wire to be the ground side, you can tap the connection you want at the harness to the headlight control stalk. If you want to keep it on the 'power' side of things, you need to run a wire in from the engine bay.

I don't have a 2002 wiring diagram, otherwise I'd give you the wire colors.

I have a set of driving lights on my Camry setup to only turn on with the high beams. If the high beams are on, you can turn the driving lights on and off, otherwise they are always off. It works out quite well. If you need the driving lights, you should have the high beams on too!

That's why I posted the link to the wire diagram. You can tap the green wire with white stripe any where between the driver headlight bulb and the fuse box. ('01-'02 only, they changed colors a lot.)
