Hella 700 hid conversion questions

I apologize if this is in the wrong section. I have 4 hella 700s on my bumper that I’m planning to put 55w hids in and I have a couple of questions for anyone who has done it. Mainly I would like to know if it is better to just put the hid bulb in the housing or would it be better to use an actual projector? I’ve never seen anyone use projectors in the hellas and I wonder if it’s necessary, I would think it would provide a better beam pattern.

Also, can the ballasts be wired directly to the harness included with the lights, or do I need to redo the entire setup? I’m currently running 4 lights powered by the battery with two relays, one for each light and a single switch controlling all 4

From my understanding of HID in general the only way to go is through a Projector its just the best option for a solid focus and control of the light, With out it u would just have a blast of light without any distance to it at all... I've been toying with a fog lamp projector hid setup but haven't fully pulled the trigger because I am wanting to go yellow

Thanks, I’m leaning towards projectors myself but the only problem I’m running into is I’ve never seen anyone put a projector in the hella housing, they always just put the bulb in there and it seems to work pretty well but I’m wondering if a projector wouldn’t be better
 
Those lights have a driving beam pattern, correct? IMO retrofitting projectors into them is pointless unless you want to utilize them as auxiliary lowbeams, you may not even have enough depth in the housings to install projectors.

One relay should be sufficient to power a pair of ballasts, what size is the fuse anyway?
 
Yeah, I think you need to clarify your question. Are you wanting to use these as offroad lights or as replacement headlights or some sort?

If they are going to be used as offroad lights, just throw HIDs in them and call it a day. I did it years ago on a set of 700's and again on a set of 500ffs. They are more than bright enough.

You will not have the depth needed to do a projector in the 700 based on most of the projectors I have seen.
 
Thank you for all the responses, yes I intend to use them as off road lights so my only concern is throwing as much useful light as possible
 
How much are the hid kits per light? I know you already have the 700’s, but the red/ black ring 7” HID lights have been around for years and have really come down in price. They’re less than $30/ light delivered! You could sell the 700’s and probably be into the new lights for less than you’d spend on HiD kits to convert them. Plus you wouldn’t have to spend the time doing the conversions.

I was planning to get the kits from DDM so I’d have about $80 into converting all 4, if I was going to do it over again I would probably get those ones

Edit - that price is for all four of them? That’s super cheap, how is the quality? If those are good lights I may end up just getting those. Is the ballast built in or do I have to get a separate ballast

Are they actually driving/spot or fog/flood beam pattern as described by the seller? I've seen other sellers state they're driving/spot beam.
 
I know they have the ballasts integrated into them, but I have no experience with them personally. They had a good reputation for an alternative to the Hella 4000 HID’s since they were less than half the price back in the day. A lot of desert prerunner guys ran them because HID throws light a lot further than incadescent lights and you could step the wattage down and still have a bright light. A good incadescent light like the Hella 4000 was 100 watts, and a good HID light like these red rings is 55w.

Like I said above I have no personal experience with these, but the first link above the lights have a noticeable design in the reflector. This link shows the spot pattern, and you’ll notice the reflectors are perfectly smooth. This is a common theme between the two types of lights from what I’ve noticed over the years.

Edit: they could still be a driving/ euro and not a true flood/ fog pattern though.
 
Too bad the seller doesn't have actual beam pics. At under $30 each from either auction they look like a pretty good deal.
